Girls Craft Thingy
Anyone out there know of the girls craze in the UK of making something called a 'Scooby Doo?'

They consist of different colored plastic wires that are braided together to make, I dunno- chains of plastic????? Hard to describe. I had never heard of them or seen anything like that until I saw my neices with them. (Have boys so I'm clueless) smile

Can anyone help me out with this? Is there a US equivalent and what is it known as cuz I don't want to look like an idiot asking for scooby doo's if they are unheard of here.

I ask this because the 10 yr. old daughter of an old friend of mine is very ill at Stanford Childrens Hospital so this may be something out of the ordinary to keep her occupied.

Re Girls Craft Thingy
Just asked my 11-yr old. She says she has seen bracelets made like this but doesn't know what they call them - she had not heard of them being called "scooby-doos". Not much help really.... sorry

Just found somewhere that you can actually buy em too )
http//www.qualitytimetoys.com/
Put Scoubi in the search box top left of web site.

Ebay has e-books with instructions....

Or just put scoubidou in a search and you get loads of results, which, yes, may be from the UK but wouldnt cost all that much in shipping.

Having now seen the picture, daughter tells me it's "gimp". The plastic stuff they are made with is called gimp and so is the thing they make with it. That's in Massachusetts anyway. And it's not a bracelet. (That was my mistake)

Here is where you can buy. Scroll down to Lanyard

when I was a kid it was called french knitting and you used knitting wool, thread. plastic or anything you could make into a thread. like a shoelace. You would get an old cotton reel, bang in 4 nails and make key rings for all and sundry.

Re Girls Craft Thingy
When we went back to the UK in June scoobies were all the rage and my kids got totally into them. Wished at the time that I could have worked out a way of importing them over here and setting up a little empire ...

Re Girls Craft Thingy
It's not really french knitting - this is more like putting one piece over another and making a sort of square knot thingy.

They say there is nothing new under the sun, we did something like this when we were very small, and my mum showed us how to do it. Mostly we used 4 threads and ended up with a square sectioned thing that was flexible.

p.s. It would have been during WW2, that we did this.It might have been during WW1 that my mother did it.

You can buy huge packs of those thin plastic laces for next to nothing in Big Lots (if you have that store there), so I expect they'll be available in Dollar Stores soon. Or you can pay a fortune and go to an expensive toy store or order off t'internet.

Re Girls Craft Thingy
I remember making the things when I was a kid, and we even called them Scooby Doo's. If I got 4 plastic thingies in front of me, I think I could even still make a Scooby bracelet. I might have to get meself to Big Lots tomorrow. roll Oh for those childhood memories...

They have been around for donkeys, and yes, I remember the lasses having them back in the days. They are called GIMP here in Canada. I guess they are back again, just like furbies, anyone remember those from a few years back?
