We have just started a new service within the UK that might be of interest to the Brits abroad.
SIPCall is a new service (first publicly available service of its type
within the UK) enabling Internet users to make and receive telephone
calls to and from the UK telephone network (PSTN) irrespective of
their geographical location.
Because the call is routed via the Internet, there is no call charge until
it breaks out onto the UK telephone network. (A call to a UK landline
phone costs 4p per minute +VAT at anytime.) This enables, for
example, a subscriber in New York or Auckland to make and receive
calls within the UK, just as if they were here! Each subscriber is
allocated a UK telephone number.
This communication service is not limited to voice but also integrates
functions such as instant messaging, video, application sharing and
file transfer. The service offers a more efficient and advanced way of
communication than traditional telephony.
Further more, IP to IP communication between two people using
either a computer or an IP telephone is always free of call charges
regardless of their location in the world.
There is also a voice mail facility.
We have also seen a lot of interest in this service from foreign
companies that wish to have a UK virtual office. Customers are often
put off if they have to dial an international number, but with this
service, the customer simply dials a UK number and then the call is
routed on-Net to the company's office - with no international call
charge.
The service is primarily designed for broadband users but will work
with a simple dial-up connection although the call quality will be
greatly reduced.
