What tv shows did you grow up with? I've spent the afternoon listening to some of my co-workers talk about the shows they watched and I didnt know any of them so I thought it'd be nice to hear about some good ole British ones. Anything from the Clangers to Button Moon to Crackerjack to Swap Shop.
When I was very young, I loved Andy Pandy, Bill & Ben the flowerpot men (blobbaweeeeed), and Hector's House. Later, it was Magic Roundabout, Sooty & Sweep, Playhouse, Crackerjack Swapshop. Also loved Tiswas, Jimmy Saville (what was that called again?), Danger Mouse!
Brings back such great memories thinking about them! D
Jim'll Fix It.
He once said that he reads and responds to every letter. Well when I was about 7 I asked him to make me Quaterback for the Miami Dolphins. No letter back, nothing. He has let us all down.
No TV in my time.
My favourite Radio program ( and only one for kids) was Childrens Hour.
I'm 42 so my exprience is from about 1966-1973.
There was Watch With Mother at lunchtime with Bill and Ben, The Woodentops, Andy Pandy, Tales By The Riverbank etc. I didn't like any of them very much.
At around 400pm there was Playschool which had the famous "windows" - a somewhat early version of the Microsoft model. IE Let's look through the round window.....
Then around 500 there were more kids' programmes Blue Peter on BBC, Magpie on ITV. Shows like Crackerjack with Leslie Crowther. There were also bizarre shows like Twizzle (my soft toy cat was named after Footso on Twizzle) and excellent crap like The Double Deckers. A bunch of kids who I think lived in a disused London bus and had all sorts of adventures I also loved all the American stuff Atom Ant, Secret Squirrel, Quick Draw McGraw, Yogi and Boo-Boo, Wacky Races, Scooby-Doo, Banana Splits (truly the kid equivalent of dropping acid) Tom and Jerry etc.
There were also weekend shows as well. Who can forget the excellent Catweazle ? Others were far more yucky - like Black Beauty. They used to show crap like The Jackson 5 cartoon show and The Partridge Family as well.
There were loads of evening shows I'd never miss either. But they aren't strictly kids shows. A very borderline one was The Goodies, which was clearly aimed at kids. My girlfriend mysteriously still has some Goodies and it's still quite funny although the Benny Hill-style still/stop photography looks a little quaint these days. Also Top of the Pops in the days it was introduced by such "groovy" deejays as Alan Freeman and Jimmy Saville.
You raise a point Lee with old American cartoons - the quality and standard of cartoons like Atom Ant, Wacky Races, Marvin The Martian, Road Runner, Foghorn Leghorn, Rocky and Bulwinkle, and all that is so far above things from today.
What about catch the pigeon. The best of the lot.
Dasterdly And Mutley which was an offshoot of Wacky Races. D
Loved Mutley. The dog I have now has many of the same qualities.
What was the name of the guy that couln't speak properly and designed all of the crazy planes? I'm going mad now trying to remember.
I used to try and creep down the stairs and watch Monty Python from a distance. That was really forbidden fruit. It was on at 1130 at night and my elder brothers would endlessly go on about it the next day. Finally I bought one of the records. It was the first time I heard the word f#@k on anything, anywhere except by word of mouth, which gave me a bit of a 10-year-old thrill.
Grew up without a TV and therefore wasn't in the habit of watching till I left home and had my own. Then it was Magic roundabout, on in the evenings in the 70's and TisWas on Saturday mornings. Ah , the Saturday mornings we decided to stay up all Friday night, cos if we went to bed we'd never be up in time to see the show.
I do remember seeing a circus at my friends house, on tv that is, (although maybe not,) back in the late 50's and thinking how cruel to make elephants sit on stools and why are they whipping the lions. Never was much into circuses.
Spent more time as a child reading and secretley listening to the Goons which was thought to be morally bankrupt and was therefore forbidden! roll
What about The Romper Room....hated it!
Pogles wood, and my favourite was Follyfoot. Fell head over heels in love with Steve lol
Dastardly and Mutley D
Superb.
