Hello all,

I stumbled across this forum after browsing "http://www.britsintheus.com". It's great to find an online community of expats! I wish I'd found it sooner!

I'm 28 years old and I was born and raised in Hinckley, Leicestershire (ayup me duck!). One night I decided to browse the newsgroups instead of going to the pub and lo-and-behold I stumbled across my future wife. After three years of huge telephone bills the INS bureaucratic nightmare - we could finally be together. :D

I moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in August 2000 and just a few days before those nutjobs downed the world trade centers we were married. I found a job as a graphic designer for a print shop and my wife and I settled down to enjoy our lives together.

I thought after 2 years I would have adjusted and be calling America home, but I underestimated the power of homesickness. Here in the shoeless south it is about as different from Europe as America gets (the north is far closer to England in terms of culture and landscape). I still deeply miss the rolling hills and stone walls of home... not to mention the curries and fish and chips! And I can't get used to the TV here either but I don't think I'm alone in that...

I would love to chat to other Brits in similar situations. How long did it take you to adjust and start calling America "home"? Are any of you from Leicestershire? Are any of you living in NC? Feel free to drop me an email: octisback@earthlink.net

I'm looking forward to being an active member of the forums!
