Just FYI - current processing times for EAD's in New York City are over 7 months. Make sure any one who needs to renews theirs well in advance.

If anybody is waiting for there E.A.D in New York, Do yourself a favor and get down to your local INS office, I live on Long Island and applied for my E.A.D in April of this year, After waiting 90 days from the date on the receipt, Me and the wife went down the local INS office in the city, We went Sunday night at 1130pm, we was about 57 in line, we waited until the office opened(730am) Monday morning. At about 430pm that day and after waiting a total of 17 hours in line I walked out with my E.A.D.
It was a long night and day but worth it.
Just remember, you need to wait 90 days from the date printed on your receipt or you won't get the E.A.D, I found that out the first time I went, But not until I waited in line for 8 hours!. Also make sure you are one of the first 100 hundred people as this is all the INS process each day. Keep an eye out for people who turn up just before the office opens and try to push in the line, A few people did that when I was there, As a result fights broke out.
Anybody who makes the trip to do this, My thoughts are with you, it was a nightmare. (

EAD is "Employment Authorization Document" or work card as most people call it. D

Is this something new? I got my green card in 1987 and have never heard of it.

Your green card basically is a super-EAD but for those folks who have not been here long and have not been processed to get a green card, they need an EAD in order to get a job to live on in the meantime.
I had at least two before my green card was processed. The temporary stamp in the passport can authorise employment as well - I've used mine a couple of times to satisfy my employer.

I thank heavens that I got processed before all this madness started! I did have to get to the INS office at Federal Plaza at about 5 am back in 1996. I think I was very lucky. It took me two extensions on my card before I finally got my green card in 2001.

It was a nightmare for me too! I'd equate it with being confined to a cattle pen for several hours and then the mad rush to get out as soon as the gate's opened. :o AND it was the middle of winter. Never in my life have I experienced such icy winds.
My one piece of advice: - No matter how upset, cold and bitter you may feel once those doors are opened and the let everyone in, be polite. INS officials have a tendency to be immune to jokes and keenly sensitive to sarcastic remarks. You'll find your papers on the bottom of the pile or even *mis-placed*, extremely quickly.
