Hey y'all, I see that there are some people that seem to know there stuff here!! Thank god. I have a little question for you.
My girlfriend is living in Florida at the moment as a Perm Res, is there any sort of petiton that she can file for me?? Or do I have to sort a job and work visa out from over here? I have been offered a work placement but I am not sure if they will do the ness paperwork for me. I am only a Mechanic, it seems you have to be a Graduate of some form or another to even be considered a work prmit..... Sorry this post is a bit higgledy piggledy!!
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

being a permanent resident gets you no clout in bringing someone over. She cannot sponsor you, you need a citizen to do that and then it will take oh, about ten years. You will need to sort it out yourself, or you could just go on holiday and stay there, get casual work while its all going through!

Hi Beaker,

I'm not sure how much the laws have changed since 9/11 but I think your girlfriend would need to be a US citizen to get you a visa to come over... My wife brought me over on a K1 fiance visa (which means we had 90 days from the date of my arrival to get married), but she was a citizen.

3 years ago before I moved there was a 90 day "visa waiver program", I visited my then fiancee several times using that. You just fly over with your normal british passport and stay for nearly three months. They might have abolished this in the wake of 9/11 of course so you would have to check. And if you stay for over 90 days then you would have real trouble getting back in in the future.

The best place for visa info... the place that helped my wife and I out beyond belief was the newsgroup alt.visa.us.marriage-based. Those people know their stuff! And not only on marriage visa issues either. Perhaps they can help.
A permanent resident *can* sponsor a spouse but it will take a VERY long time to go through and isn't recommended. You have to join a long list segregated by country of origin and wait for you *number* to come up before you can even think of moving to the US. However, once your gilfriend/ wife becomes a citizen, your application will automatically get *upgraded* to what's called *immediate visa* availability.

The website mentioned by Craig is excellent for these types of detailed questions - I think you can access it at the bottom of the main forum page.

Good luck.
