Just announced Vancouver Canada elected to host the 2010 winter olympic games .

Vancouver won the vote in spite some tough competition from 5 other countries .

I wonder who many palms they had to grease and how many times the prime minister had to bend over to get this ?. wink

And because of that, the rules have been changed.
The selection judges are not allowed to go to the cities ( officially)

I take it Rossendale Dry Ski slope wasn't in the running then? lol
Thank God Manchester have stopped asking. I'd love to see the Olympics in a place like Turkey, but I doubt that will happen.

So you think the rules of engagment have changed since SLC mmm think again .old habits die hard .

I think after the scandals of SLC, the host cities and the IOC have to be whiter than white

I (vaguely) learned to ski there -is it still going?

Actually there probably was a bit of politics involved. Toronto lost the summer Olympics for 2008 to Beijing - which was considered a controversial and very poltical choice, so I think there was a sense that Canada's time had come at the IOC.

But Keith's right, the whole process is less greasy than it used to be.

Also, Vancouver put in a very strong bid, the only other seriously considered contender was Saltzberg.

I'm glad to see Vancouver get it. It's where my family are originally from, it's stunningly beautiful, but the economy has been in the dumper for a few years there, so it could do with some good news.

Grillions of Brits there by the way (and Aussies and South Africans).

My father is retired on Vancouver Island.
