Can anyone explain the difference between A league football and MLS football. Is there a pyramid league structure, or are they independent of one another ??
I think it's like Major league baseball and the minors except I'm not sure they're necessarily affiliated to the bigger clubs.
As far as I know the leagues are independant of each other. And the A League teams are not affiliated with bigger clubs...well at least my local team the Rochester Rhinos aren't (they are one of the biggest supported A League teams and the rumours are that they will be an MLS team in the not too distant future)
If they were really smart, they'd make it the second division of the MLS. Oh yeah, were talking about American sport here...none of the 'Big Boys' could get relegated..out of the question.

yeah...I fail to see the excitement of a league system with no promotion or relegation. Takes away the most exciting aspect of the game if you ask me. It would be nice to see the Rhinos in the MLS but would be nice for them to get there through playing well and winning the A - League rather than just having some guy in a suit in an office somewhere at MLS HQ make the decision.
This thread has got me thinking......wondering to be more precise Just think were football to become really popular in this country and they started having post seasons and playoffs, would the eventual winners be called "World Champions" just like they are in all the other sports??
lol
doesn't all the players in the MLS have their contracts with the league rather than the respective clubs?
hence they have a draft every year and all that?

Presumably they are affiliated with FIFA, and they would never allow it ??
The US soccer federation is very affiliated with Fifa,
and I think brazil would be a little upset if the new world champions came out of a game between Tampa Bay and San Jose.
I'd be astonished as there isn't a team here in Tampa.... grin

Correct the MLS league owns all the players and the teams are franchised out,and they have a salary cap much like the NFL .

MLS is like baseball having a tough time financialy at this time and two ? i think seasons ago cut two teams from their membership both teams where in florida ..tampa and miami .
I support the MLS and when i lived in northern VA watched the DCunited quite frequently here my nearest team is in dallas bit far to go every weekend .
If i was in VA id still support a bad and getting worse (groan) dc united ,,not the team that won the MLS cup firt 3 seasons of the league .

Well I can recall the original Tampa Bay Rowdies but that was when I was about 10! That whole league went down the pan I think but Pele was playing in it for a while.
