hi folks,
seen it mentioned in other threads and I apologise if this has been asked before but could someone explain what a "hackable" DVD player is? I'd love to be able to play my DVD's bought in the UK over here without having to lash out a load of dosh on an expensive multi region player. I assume it's not exactly legit to do it but any pointers /suggestions to how it can be done would be appreciated and will be kept between you and I ..promise!!! lol

Search for the other threads and you will find links to sites which list most known hacks. Look for your model on there. Most players appear to be hackable from what Beest and I learned when we bought one (for $45) a couple of weeks ago. Hacks are usually something like leave the drawer open, type in 1234 on the remote, then stand on your head.
Do you already have a player?
here's one thread

search using "dvd" and "hack" and plenty of others pop up.
Thanks folks.
We do already have a cheap player. An Apex...not sure of the model number just at the moment but will check it out when I get home from work.
typing the model number and "hack" in Google should bring up other sites too. We had to hunt to find ours, but we got there eventually.

???
you must have a strange model of dvd player
I've had a Sampo DVE-612 for about a year I'd guess and had hacked it immediately so I can watch any region DVD fine. I worked and there is a website that deals with that make plus some others too so it's worth checking it out
http//www.area450.com
some interesting information on there for you anyway.
thanks to you all on here I am now owner of a dirt cheap multi region dvd player. A Cyberhome DVD 300 from Radio Shack cost $58 and has a further $10 off with a mail in rebate...bargain! The hack was a piece of cake too.....I'm so happy I can watch quality TV again! smile
grin
Dunno why we're so happy about ours -we only have one UK DVD. It must be the principle of the thing lol

Good pick! I am off to get one at Radio Shack myself at the weekend as a friend got one the other week and it looked great. I already have a Pansaonic so this one can go in my bedroom.

Yeah it's great ! Looks good and has an excellent picture, can't go wrong for the money.
You can always look at http//www.dvdoverseas.com they supply a huge range of multi region, multi format and multi voltage vcrs, dvds and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Yeah, but have you seen their prices? eek
You get what you pay for. You can buy a DVD player thats multi region and format for $160 and a VCR for less than $330. If you check the prices against the same models in the shops they work out cheaper...
