I just got my greencard renewed this morning - a surprisingly pleasant experience. After fighting my way through traffic up to Denver I spent a total of 15 minutes in the INS office (I know it's called something different now, but don't remember what) and that included chatting with one of the agents there. It cost me $130. I think that's why they do the renewal every 10 years, just to get the revenue.
My son got his renewed in New Jersey and it took him over 3 hours, so I'm counting myself as fortunate.

Joan,
In my case it took about the same length of time (in fact the agent that processed my renewal was a naturalised Brummie!!) when I renewed my GC.
That said, the cheque was cashed last November, the old GC was hole punched and the extension for another year added, but I have yet to receive the replacement piece of plastic. Apparently that can take 6 months, but I decided to send of a form that basically says "what's happenig".
I have still not had my SASE back yet.

I was told that it takes about 11 months to get the new one. They gave me a form to fill in and send off if I haven't received it by then.
All the agents except for the head honcho were not of American birth (trying to think of the PC way of saying that). I got the impression that at least one was not a US citizen. Since the prerequisite for doing the security screening at airports is being a US citizen (or am I wrong in that?), you had to be a citizen to work for the government, or do I have my wires crossed here?
Joan
I have had my "Green"(pinkish and blue)card extended after the "ten year out mark".It now looks like a crude ATM flexible friend.

I had it done at the Portland office (Maine)in Sept 002. On enquiring of the whereabouts of my New card at six months ...was told basically don't hold your breath on receiving it inside a year (9/11 cited)!! What a TO DOOOO!!And where does that leave me ?!
Any ways, that's the least of my probs at the mo ...JOB HUNTING!!
bye fer noww!
I'm still waiting for mine too. ???
My hole punched card expires in July I think.
I was told 6 months when I went to get the renew, but looked at their website and it says something like 275 to 348 days approx. mad
So I sit and twiddle my thumbs until June and then if I don't have it I assume another trip to Portland so they can put a second hole in my card. roll
They punch holes in your card to show that you're legal?
Doesn't exactly sound forgery-proof to me. ???

It's a holographic sticker with the months on it. They hole punch the month a year from the time you go and renew.
Hmm, seems that this isn't quite as fast as I thought.
Oh well.

Sounds like a coffee card, pop enough holes and the next one comes free.
I don't have anything like that card at all - mine looks like a Driver's License with about 300 holograms and a big slab of liquid crystal on the back.

But couldn't anyone do that?
Wouldn't it be easier just to apply for citizenship?

Probably, but IMO, that's just for show! It's like prescibing sugar pills to a chronic hypochondriac!
All the real info's in their computer system. They update it there so in reality the card's important but not the be and end all.
When I had the problem with the INS making me five years older than I actually am on my greencard, I had to get a new one before I dared to use it. I could just imagine the palava upon my re-entry to the US and the two dates not matching (the one in the puter and the one on my card)!
I still think that the system as it stands currently is very easy to beat.
