Does that mean that what I thought was an English thing is really owned by an American Co.
I'm so sad! ???
Ju
No, they probably bought it out lock stock and barrel or it's a franchise. But it certainly started at home in Britain.
The original maker of Marmite, CPC (from Burton Upon Trent, my hometown), changed their name to Best foods.

Bestfoodsunilever is a huge international conglomerate - Marmite is still British, still the best thing to put on toast! smile smile

Ambrosia rice pudding (oo-arrr!) is also an American label food now. Some folks down in Devon were trying to encourage their corporate people to take an interest in the local sports (sponsorships) but they sent a stupid, form letter to them, stating that it was not in their interests to be associated with the area which is really stupid when you think about it but that's Corporates for you.

Devon knows why they let the Americans get their mitts on it.
Oh I shall sleep tonight then !
Unilever has asub up the road from where I used to live. That's ok then
Don't tell anyone but marmite is my secret ingreient to many of my recipes !

I cannot get Marmite locally, but our friendly health food store does Vegemite. It tastes much the same, but do any of you know if it actually is?
I do know that Vegemite comes from Australia.
I just love thick crusty bread, creamy butter with a good spread of marmite/vegemite on top!
My American Hubby thinks this is awful!!! (That's his "polite" description!)
Not the same at all. I can get both here in Seattle & they taste totally different, IMO.
Marmite contains

Thankyou was,
It does indeed look like two different products.
I suppose that as I have been deprived of the "real thing" for so long, the substitute tastes pretty good!! lol
Was I read you r Marmit vs Vegamite and realised I missed Malt extract. My dear old granny used to give me it to me ( with cod liver oil in it!) when i was a bairn and my kids grew up on it too!
Where can I get it?

I just don't get Marmite or Vegemite! But I do like Black Treacle -does that count?
My son believes that Marmite is a petroleum by product and that only people born in the UK are legally allowed to eat it.

I suggested to my american friend that she try it!
So, on her first vacation to the UK she did. Her hubby fed her a spoonful!
I then told her we spread it thinly on toast or bread, but she won't go near it again!

That reminds me of when we had a foreign student stay with us once, y'know those school exchange type things? Well anyway, I was merrily spreading huge dollops of chocolate spread on my butty when she picked up the marmite. You can imagine the whole family's response when she started splattering copious amounts of marmite on her bread- ugh!! I love marmite but it's certainly like tar when you exceed the half a teaspoon level! As a kid I also used to eat Bovril as a spread too - anyone else do that? You could get away with spreading more of the stuff on - mind you - I've found marmite these days to be less strong and dark - has anyone else found this????
I used to have a phase back home when I would just eat only Marmite on toast!! lol
I would just come home from work and not have a cooked meal or anything and just do a load of toast and have Marmite on it. This lasted for a few months aswell!!
I cant seem to get any Marmite around here and now that I'm thinking of it, I'll try to get some because I feel the addiction coming on!! eek
I absolutely craved Marmite and Twiglets when I was pregnant. Have kept a jar on hand ever since! eek
