We renewed our passports at the British Embassy in Washington DC. You have to send your expired one off and they will cancel it and sent it back to you with the new one.
Their website below will give you all the info you need on getting the job done: -
Passport Information for British Nationals Resident in the USA
Hope this helps.

Like UKM said, renew it thru the Embassy. I did that myself - the passport will say issued at Washington DC - which makes my friends all think I have diplomatic immunity grin

As above but here's a couple of things.
try and do your own Passport photo's as
A)The US is not big on Photo booths.
B) Kiko's or anyone that offers a passport photo service chare about $20+ for passport photos of poor quality which are slightly bigger than UK passport size.
Also be sure to emphasise the correct date of birth.Use the US date method. we thought they would use the UK day then month
My daughters passport renewal took 3 times to get right as they kept putting her birthday as the 9th of March not 3rd of Sept

How much does it cost to renew through Washington DC?
Is it a straight conversion from the Pounds Sterling rate if you renewed in the UK?
Last time I had to get passport photos, there was a place across the road from the INS and they charged me $8 for two and did them within about 3 minutes.

I took my husbands photo with our digital and printed out to the req'd size, and it was accepted! I was surprised

Just about to send my forms off today, actually. The cost in US dollars for a renewal is, at the moment anyway, $101.80
I got my pictures done at Walmart.. it was $10.50

I sent a couple of passport applications off 3 weeks ago. They haven't even taken the money yet. . I guess I don't need them for another 11 weeks
I had the photos done at Costco for, I think, $6. They are the standard US passport photos, which, if you cut trim down the sides a little bit, should meet all the UK specs.

Our passport/greencard photos cost 8 bucks for two, the Embassy had no problem using US size photos and the form told you where to write the month and day of the date. Easy Peasy. And it only took a week, but this was for a new passport in autumn, not a renewal in spring.

The money was taken out of my account this morning, so all I need to do is wait in for Fed Ex.
