So, I was going home from work the other day and there was a college baseball game going on in the stadium outside my office.

During one of the many breaks, I heard the announcer say they had one of the crowd to sing that "Take me out to the ball game" song. This girl gets on the microphone and basically murders it - she probably got a big cheer anyway but thankfully, I'd made it to my car before the end.

Just wondered whether this is a traditional thing at baseball games (never been and don't watch it on TV).

Should we have people at our stadiums in Britain singing "He's football crazy, he's football mad" or maybe humming the tune to "Match of the Day" over the public address system? smile
Or 'Who's the wonker in the black...?'.

I seem to remember this happening once with some song or the other at a game I was at. The girl that sung it was quite fit and the crowd broke into to choruses of 'Get your t**s out for the lads...' smile
At Bristol City (Ashton Gate) on Boxing Day last year, they had some Kylie Minogue wannabe singing along to some stuff at half time.

She was quite fit too and not a bad singer really, plus she was brave enough to do a circuit of the ground when she had finished her set. Remarkably, the Green Army were quite restrained and gave her a big cheer. I was expecting far worse, having seen how they savaged and saw off several sets of cheerleaders at those grounds who dared wheel them out.
Yeah. I seem to remember several sets of cheerleaders venturing to the Manor a few years ago never to be seen again. Maybe the crowds have become more lax nowadays with there being more women at the matches and all.

Are you saying you've never heard of "The Seventh Inning Stretch", or that you've never heard of it being sung by a "pro", in the same ghastly way they do the national anthem?

In Cincinnati, although it's about 14 years since I've been to yawnball, the organist plays the tune and the crowd do the singing.

My only experience at a baseball game was spent gazing up at the scoreboard trying to figure out what all the numbers meant. Of course, my wife was equally clueless about them too. When I finally figured out what was going on it was over.
Being married to a big baseball fan I have been to several major league games and know all about the "Seventh Inning Stretch". Yes - that song is traditionally sung after the 7th inning when everyone gets a few minutes to stand up and take a stretch. This was started by a long lost President, I believe, who decided he needed a break during a baseball game.

I also know all the words.... and have eaten Crackerjack roll

Aha - that must have been it. Thanks Ameriscot and Kentgirl.

No, I have no concept of any of the baseball traditions so this is all new to me.
I think I will be going to my first 'ball game for 4th July. I have resisted long enough, but as my wife and I have ignored Independence Day for the last two years I figured it would be nice to do something for her this year. I'll fill you in on the details, now where did I put my red coat?

The only other one that I'm aware of is getting tanked up with watery lager.

You will enjoy the ballgame Beng. For such a boring sport, it makes a fantastic day out. So much like going to a county cricket match. You don't have to worry about missing out on any action, because there really isn't any to miss, and it's just nice to hang out in the summer.

I have been to 3 of the 4 pro sports teams here in Dallas and I have to say that for a good time, The Ballpark tops the others by a mile.
I'm with Laurence. The game itself can be tedious, but the day should be enjoyed.

Start with "tailgating" That's parking your car (and a bunch of your friends cars too) in the car park 2-3 hours before the game. Get out the grill and the cooler and eat burgers (brats in Milwaukee) and drink cold beer.

The car park will fill up and people will start to go into the stadium. Don't worry if you miss the first few innings as long as you get in in time for the seventh inning stretch.

There are some drinking/betting games you can play (email me for more info!) that will make the game fly by.

The next morning when you wake up you will remember the tailgating and drinking, but very little of the actual game - exactly as it should be!
I much prefer Baseball to either Basketball or American Football. We have been to games of the Houston Astros every season since we moved here, it used to be a cheap day out with the kids when they were younger and they were both very "in to baseball" Also every 6 weeks they made the A Honor Roll they would be given free tickets for the whole family. The Houston Astrodome was a great place to go, covered so the hot humidity of Houston in the summer months didnt matter, now the Astros are at Minute Maid Park, which has a detractable roof, not as good and also bad for mosquitos!
It's cricket lol

Love the game, especially when my DS is playing. Perhaps thats why I enjoy it, I have to learn the lingo and the way the game is played to help my son wink
Isn't it just a more tedious version of rounders? I've never been to a game and have no plans ever to do so. Likewise every other sport in the world you can mention.
