I've been thinking about this for a while, you know how we all go on about the UK food we miss, well what about the food we love that we would never have eaten in the UK?
I love (in no particular order) hash browns, biscuits and white gravy - the first time Christine said "Biscuits and gravy" I got the mental picture of digestives in Bisto... but I can eat that stuff till I explode. I love Mexican / Latino food, nachos, burritos, enchiladas - never had it in the UK but I eat that at least twice a week. Barbeque - give Amurricans their due, they know how to make bl**dy good barbeque and no mistake. Mountain Dew - quite possibly the finest pop on the face of the planet.
Ohhhhh, feeling hungry now...
Yes have to agree with you there Vegasrudeboy, about the Mexican food I too love it.I myself have to make enchiladas once a week for my children smile very good to I might say wink Wonder why Mexican food has not ever taken off over the pond ?

I think it's pretty obvious, much for the same reason Indian food isn't as huge here (yes there are pockets of restaurants around the country in areas that are predominantly inhabited by Asian people.
I enjoy *real* Mexcian food too. Actually moreso than Indian food these days. Especially if you live near a large Hispanic population some of the food is out of this world. (And we're not talking about psuedo Mexican food either).
Andrew
Must be regional because there are a couple of Mexican restaurants in Pompey and I've been cooking Mexican food for about 10 years.
I do love the American style of big ass salads you get,Creole stuff like Jambalya Buffalo steaks, Elk and without wanting to appear a bit redneck.. chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy.
Also the number of varieties of tequilla that can be purchased ....mmmmmm...slammers
I have to agree, authentic Mexican food is by far my favorite.
I can't stand Indian food, never could, so it's nice not to have to smell all of that bloody curry any more grin
Man after my own heart. I'd be a zombie just going through the motions if I didn't get my Mountain Dew fix everyday.
I'm going to be a fat bast*rd and say the pizzas. The large pizza in the UK was about the size of a medium pizza here. And the EXTRA LARGE pizza here... They seem to taste better here too.
I like the Mexican food too. Also the vast array of Sub sandwiches available.
Mountain Dew - quite possibly the finest pop on the face of the planet.
Oh I nearly forgot.
there are some seriously good Thai restaurants in the US.
The Siamese Plate on Folsam in Boulder
Ohhh ..suit you sir
I'm always amazed at how yummy apple cider is.
Prime rib/beef tenderloin is rather good too.
Summer sausage, & chicken fried steak with country gravy. My favourite being A Philly cheese steak sandwich, I could eat those every day. Beef jerky. There's lots of stuff really.
Janet
More stuff I love Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, beef jerky, Subway sandwiches, Baby Ruth bars, Sonic ...well, everything really, Sonic rocks, root beer floats...
And what is it with KFC? I never saw no mashed potatoes with gravy on the UK menus, nor biscuits, in fact it seems like the UK KFC has 25% of the US menu in a good place. mmmmmmm KFC... drools like Homer.
And did anyone else feel like this? When you first get here, you go to the store and you see those massive bags of crisps. First thing I thought was "What a bunch of fat greedy b@$tards, how can they eat so much?" Now I sit down in front of the TV and eat the whole bag. Same thing with ordering pizza, first time Mrs Rude ordered an Extra Large with all the trimmings, I about pooped myself it was so huge. Now I eat half the thing myself.
Oh and Lamar's Donuts too... they're way better than Kirspy Kreme.
Yeah, I packed on about 3 stone in my 1st 6 months here what with the huge portions and lack of walking anywhere. I've lost 2 stone, but I'm still carrying some of the excess baggage... sad
Ceasar Salads
I'm struggling with this question ......
seriously, I am, I'm really struggling, I don't think I love anything to eat here for some reason.
Dammit, that's depressing.
Forgive me, it may be cos I'm preggi !!! sad
It's OK Nicky, I'm struggling too and I'm NOT preggy! lol
There's nothing I'd miss really, food wise. I much prefer our small, delicate British-sized bags of crisps (Walkers), and ASDA's doughnuts, nice fresh greenhouse tomatoes that you can buy at the roadside....stuff like that. smile
Debs x smile

I like Sainsbury's "American Style" Raspberry Jam Doughnuts. Never seen anything like them here -must be revenge for English Muffins!
I'm struggling too, although Ceasar salads in restaurants aren't bad. I don't like spicy food
I like that salmon is more readily available and affordable (albeit farmed ), although nice cod is harder to come by.

I had real problems trying to eat here when I was pregnant. I think when you are pregnant, you like to have familiar foods, and I couldn't have much of that here - although my appetite has dwindled with each pregnancy: I struggled with #4 in the UK as well. I lost quite a bit of weight over the course of my pregnancy which got the midwife's knickers in a twist until I refused to be weighed any more.
Even now, though, I can't think of much that I feel enthusiastic about. I tend to cook or seek out food that I'd have in the UK. I'm not much of a fan of spicy food, and I don't think I've ever had a "proper" Mexican (just the cheese-covered tat from Applebee's & chums). I think I need to seek out some decent American grub in the next couple of months - Elaine???? any suggestions for me???
