Having recently obtained permanent resident status for the US (hoorah) my parents are now making noises about wanting to move out to Florida and retire. Something to do with grandkids and all that!

Does this require a particular type of visa or can they just do it, so long as they can support themselves?

Cheers
Gary
Can you still acquire permanent tourist visa's? if they aren't going to work maybe thats a thing to apply for. They would have to renew the visa whenever their passport runs out but worth looking into. You can get social security cards that prohibit work authorisation, those cards are good for opening bank acct's setting up utilities and such.
As I say worth looking into.
This situation is described on the London Embassy website. If I recall, they go on a visa waiver or B2 visa, and leave/re-enter at the 3 or 6 months. They can't work, but they are very welcome to buy property and spend their savings.

Parents are in the immediate relative category, so a US citizen can petition for them to immigrate (I-130) and get them over quite quickly (6 - 12 months-ish). A PR can also do this, but it takes a lot longer.
Gary,
Have you checked into Healthcare yet, my parents are thinking about retiring, but the healthcare cost seem extortionate for them, plus not covering preexisting conditions (my Dad has heart problems and diebetes), I think he would be better off staying put, I could see there savings being blown on health insurance. Have you looked into this yet? Let me know if you have anything enlightening!
Thanks
Angela
My British friends mother spends 6 months here and then 6 months with her other daughter back in the UK. I'll have to ask but I think she came out on a tourist visa.
