I have a family member who has enquired about coming over and staying for six months or so but would want to work whilst here. Any ideas on how to go about this? Husband is American and I already have my greencard.

Zed.
Not a chance, unless they want to work illegally and take the risk of being deported.

Ditto, unless they were willing to come over as an au pair on a J visa - not sure how easy this would be to set up if it is something that interests you.

ok well thats not entirely true, they can come and work here, but must do so on a work visa, this by the way can take some time, i.e. 6-12 months sometimes longer. The biggest step here is finding a company that'll agree to sponsor them, and again this can take a very long time as there are only a few fields where you can really do this, i.e. IT, Engineering and nursing. Ask you friend to call the consulate nearest them and ask on ways to come and work here, but also be aware that consulate staff are quite often useless as they konw almost nothing about visa benefits, instead call this number 001 800 375 5283, this is the INS info center in america, they are quite useful, hope some of this was helpful, one last piece of advice, summer camps in the usa, employ people from abroad, they generally last about 4 months, but i think you get extra time after to stay and do the tourist thing here. Hopefully someone else will be able to elaborate on this.

They could also marry a US citizen and get in that way

Here in Maine a lot of foreigners are hired for the summer season. Most are for hotel and food service jobs.
There is a temporary workers visa that is a non immigrant visa I-129.
This visa is applied for by the employer so your reletive would have to find someone looking to hire foreign workers. This visa applies for all kinds of work.

Any way you can read all about it here.
