I need to complete an Application for Travel Document if I want to leave the US as I have filed the forms for an adjustment of status. What are acceptable reasons to the INS for leaving the country - a wedding (the real reason I need to go)? to sort out my appartment?
Really need and want to go home for about 3 weeks. Can anyone advise please?
A colleague of mine has just been through this and basically, she was told that the reason for travel had to be business-related (or a death in the family) in order for permission to be granted. Her attorney was very skeptical that even that would fly. She got a letter from work explaining the reasons for travel and how critical it was that she be there on certain dates etc. She went to Immigration with the relevant paperwork, asking for permission to travel for 2 weeks - but was then asked wouldn't she like it for a full year! Guess it's hard to predict these things and maybe she was just lucky. Hope this helps!
I am not authorised to work yet so my reason for travelling cannot be work related.
Just been to see my immigration Lawyer for a travel document - He advised not to put work reasons because I am appling on the grounds of marriage.
I simply included a letter to the INS, stating that my elderly grandparents were close to the invevitable end and that I may need to go back to the UK for their funerals. Very morbid I know, but it did the trick and I got authorisation for one year's travel.
Of course, when the inevitable happened, I didn't have the money to travel back there either time.
Blimey, All I told them was I wanted to go home and see the family for a few days and bob's your uncle three weeks later. As the Green Card can take possibly years to acquire, to be stranded here is somewhat unreasonable. The INS recognizes this fact and getting your two travel docs per year for personal use should not be too much of a problem. Although, I’m sure certain applicants will have more trouble than others and will depend on your pending application (I was K1).
Ask politely thou, always seams to work so much better with these jobsworths then demanding anything. grin
Hi nn,
You should be able to get the I-131 AP approved, no problem.

I am late in the game on this one, but I concurr with the advice given, I had to apply twice for Adavnce PArole while I was waiting for my Green Card, I just put that I wanted to be able to visit my Family while waiting for my Status, plus I needed Multiple Entry incase I had to return to the UK at Short Notice for a Death or Such.
No Problems getting it approved, as others hae said since the wait for a GC is so long, the INS are not as strict as they once were in giving it out.
