two questions
1) is it ok to just use my passport to show Date of Birth, or do i have to have my birth cert.
2) a post here jogged my memory about a police cert. do i need to have one and what ins form asks for it?
Thanks
I suspect it may depend what you need to show your date of birth for, and I think the police thing was for someone wanting to work as a nurse in Canada. A bit vague I know, but hope it helps 'til someone more knowledgable comes along.
If you are applying for a green catd, I think you'll find that you need your birth certificate. Check with INS but I think I'm right in saying that UK citizens do not need to submit police certificates of good conduct. I know I didn't.

You need both your birth certificate and passport as part of the immigrant visa process. The long-form birth certificate contains information that the passport doesn't, namely your parents' details.
There is no such thing as a good conduct certificate in the UK. The police certificate is actually a prosecution/conviction record from the police national database and you need this for an immigrant visa. It's on the IV15 Document Checklist/Packet 3.
To get your police record just go to your local police station headquarters and ask them for one. They will give you a form to fill out and you will pay (I believe the cost went up but it isnt very much) there and then. Expect it to turn up in about a month. And remeber to make a copy!!

You pick up a form at your local police station. You have to take it away as it needs counter-signing by doctor/teacher/vicar etc. You can return it to the police station along with ID and fee which they will check there and then, or you can send everything off to constabulary HQ and they will return the ID to you.
There is a statutory duty under the data protection act for them to get your report to you within 40 days, but sometimes they miss this deadline. Saying that, mostly it takes between 30 and 40 days.
The form for the police report - known as "subject access" request, or something like that, is multi-purpose. You want to check the box for Prosecution/Conviction History.
?I didn't need one
is it a spouse thing?

No, it's for anyone coming in on an immigrant visa. You came as a non-immigrant. The FBI/CIA deals with you now.
aha! thank you. (I think eek)
i'm already here so does that mean that do not need a police certificate, as the fbi is checking me out instead?
also i have my original birth certificate and it is not a long one, its old and crusty yellow and about 20cms long and 10 or 15cms wide, is this what i need or do i need another?
you'll need to get a copy of the long one.
Surely whatever forms you have to fill in will tell you exactly what evidence you need?
...or there must be an INS website somewhere to end the speculation.
