I watched this for the first time this evening to see what all the fuss was about. And now I have done that I won't have to bother again. Of course I had heard all about Simon Wossisname being rude, even cruel, to some of the entrants, but I thought he was rather restrained. As for the contestants, they nearly all sounded exactly alike to me.

What did strike me, though, was the attitude of some of the unsuccessful entrants -- they seemed to feel that fame and fortune are theirs by right and that the judges are putting obstacles in their way out of sheer bloody mindedness. The self indulgent, foul-mouthed petulance of some of the losers showed that they did have the makings of pop stardom after all!

Hey, it beats the "Union is in a helluva lousy State" address!

grin
Trust me, Simon gets ruder along the way. He was pretty tame last night - especially when Paula wasn't there to provide the Yin to his Yang.
I was waiting for one guy to come on that show all nite, Keith. He was the guy who sang "Like A Virgin". Never before have I ever felt so good about myself. And I loved his comment about growing his hair for the show.
Idol Presenter So what did it look like before?
Keith Like this, but less hair.
The auditions are the best part of "Idol". Thousands of idiot wannabees who labour under the impression that they can sing, and we get to hear and see the very worst of them! Has nobody ever told them the truth? Why does it have to be Simon Cowell who drop-kicks their pathetic ambitions into oblivion? Still, it does make for a bit of entertaining telly and more watchable than most of the drivel that's on.

Keith last night was truly awful and cringe-worthy, wasn't he. eek

Debs x smile
You have to admit it's a bloody good laugh. And as for Simon,he makes that show.I hope americans dont think we are all that rude(just dont catch me on a bad day) evil

It could be me, but my experience is that what I interpret as 'directness' and 'honesty' are considered rudeness over here. Nothing I heard Simon say seemed rude within the context... he was there to offer his professional opinion and did so...I agree, if anything he was quite restrained.

I love this part of the show, although I dont know if I will continue to watch now they are into the finalists.

Its amazing to watch so many people who are utterly convinced that they are the 'best'. I saw the end of the interview with the girl who consoles the contestants after the auditions on 'E!' yesterday. She made some comment how american kids are told they can do whatever they want if they really believe in it. Perhaps they should also be told they need the talent first!

As to Simon, I didn't think he was rude at all, in fact I think he was very restraint. As to Paula, often she was shown dancing and singing along with the contestant and then she would say a big resounding no way. Simon came across as much more honest.
I am ashamed to admit that I am now hooked on Americam Idol. I just cannot believe how some of them think they can actually sing-don't they ever listen to themselves? I remember thinking that I could sing until my Dad bought me a tape recorder when I was about 14, I haven't sung in public since-not even when extremely plastered at a karaoke night lol

I think the judges have amazing self control, I would have slit my wrists if I'd had to sit through that lot lol
Well that show has sparked something in our house! We found it most entertaining... but our three children now fancy themselves as stars, so we had to audition them in the same manner roll

Funnily enough - none of them complained when we rejected them on the grounds that they giggled and collapsed after the first line or forgot their words and had four false starts! The youngest (nearly 4) did a rotating version of Bob the Builder - he managed to spin all the way through the song before falling down lol

Sorry - I am now anxiously awaiting the next instlament..... and I thought Simon just gave them what they needed to hear - and let's face it, the little girl accepted the news very graciously - she expected him to say he didn't like it - and he said it.

Good show.
Did,nt see it and dont think i will , but ive heard before theses comments about Simon .

All the contestant know what its about before they enter the competition ,and they should,nt be surprised if Simon puts them down in a frank and honest manner .

Much like the folks who appear on the Gerry Springer show, they know they are not there to have their nails trimmed and thier car serviced .

Same thing with Howard Stern ,you know frompast experiance that if you appear on that show he will ask personal questions ... thats his stik ,

There is enought vanila on TY/RADIO as it is at least these type of shows are more like real life than the boring no emotion everybody is a cream puff ,shows americans are accustomed to ..

Same thing on here if you make a statement( in the case of american idol the statement was that they had talent ) you expect some folks who dont agree with you to post a reply .

Old old story if you cant take the heat keep out of the kitchen .

Still feeling the effects of last nights Viagra ,John?

Finally watched it last night. That Simon isn't very mean at all really, I was waaay disappointed. Anne Robinson is meaner than him - I'd be much more scathing.

Except that freak who sang "Like A Virgin." I'd pay to see him again. razz

And wasn't THAT bizarre!

It was Keith singing like a virgin?

Good on ya, Keith, -there's life in the old dog yet! I never had you down as a performer, but it just goes to show you never know! I didn't see the programme -I just heard a clip on the radio and assumed it was a much younger man. Way to go!
