Does anyone know where I can get malt vinegar by the gallon?
I can find it in little bottles but I want to make some proper pickled onions this year.
I have used apple cider vinegar with some success, but somehow it's not the same.
I've only seen malt vinegar in little bottles too.
Melhug, please post your recipe for pickled onions, I only get them if I go home. Did you bring your spices from home or did you get them here?
Janet
Hi Janet,
It's my Mums recipe, and yes I buy "pickling spice" here.
You need
One box of kleenex,
Onions,
Vinegar,
pickling spice,
salt.
clean and sterilised jars.
Peel the onions with as much speed as possible. That way you use less tissues!
I usually soak the onions in warm water before peeling, it makes it easier.
Then soak them overnight in a salt water solution and rinse well the following day.
I just pack onions and a bit of pickling spice into jars, cover with vinegar and seal.
Store for several weeks before opening.
Have a "test jar", one that you can dive into and sample to how they're tasting. As time goes by, you may need several of these "test jars!" lol
I use small boiling onions, or if you cant get them, yellow, red or white sliced ones can be tasty.
You'll have to experiment with quantities, but you'll find your own taste will guide you.
Check the ingredients on your vinegar container too, some call themselves apple cider but they are not! I actually buy the local store brand which is 100% apple cider. Heinz isn't!
I'd love to get some Aspall Cider vinegar from Suffolk, back home, it's organic!
Now, if only I could find a decent quantity of malt vinegar over here...then we're talking REALLY good pickled onions! razz
Hey..i got mine from Kroger, they are not that expensive either... havent seen any in walmart though.
Thankyou for the information. Unfortunately I don't think we have any Kroger stores near here. I'll have to check though i don't remember seeing any! smile
We do however have walmart a dozen or so miles away, but it has very limited food supplies so I never bothered looking there.
