Who remembers Gypsy Tart and the piece of apple they gave you for school dinners?

Anyone got the recipie for this????
Ah yes, my boyfriend's all time favorite dessert! He too remembers it fondly from school days. I'd never heard of it til I met him, but now every time I visit we end up getting it at the grocery store, at the bakery, and so I finally dug up a recipe so I could teach myself how to make it.

Gypsy Tart

1 14 oz tin of Evaporated milk
12 oz Dark muscovado sugar.
1 10 in shortcrust pastry case Baked

Preheat oven to 400 F. Whisk evaporated milk and sugar together for
10 - 15 minutes until light and fluffy. The mix should be coffee
coloured. Pour the mix into the pastry case and bake in the oven for
10 minutes. The gypsy tart will have a slightly sticky surface but
will not be set completely until it has been left to cool. Serve cold.
I think gypsy tart was the most disgusting thing I ever was made to eat at school (apart from meat pie and stew) - and I have bad memories of being forced to eat it. I have a very sweet tooth too.

At least I now know what was in it - nowadays they would say it had too much sugar I suppose.

I remember the stew also, and we had to clear our plate i would cut up the pieces of gristle attached to the meat into small pieces, and swallow them down with water, then go to the toilet and throw up
ahhh the good old days........june

Similar school dinner experiences.

Cheese flan was always guaranteed to make me want to hurl. I remember the gristle too and being forced to finish it before we could leave the table.

Never heard of gypsy tart. From the ingredients, I doubt I would like it much.
I think it was a Kentish thing.

Dont remember having Gypsy Tart in Hampshire...you must be right.

I quite liked the cheeseflan...it was the sight of the cold custard smeared down the side of those huge siver urns that made me feel ill.

eek
Our junior school decided it would be a great idea to switch to all in one service trays that had seperate 'compartments' for your main meal and your desert. This lead to many instances of gravy in the custard and custard over the potatoes. Yuck! Not long after that I switched to "Packed Lunch".

Our Comprehensive School canteen was pretty good though. Even the battered spam!
Gristle here too at junior school. It was the tapioca pudding with a blob of liquid red sugar in the middle that really made me hurl.

Our high school was ace! ( grin) The cafeteria operated like the old restaurants at British service stations where each item is charged individually and you just have what you want and pay at the end. Everyone had chips, beans, a doughnut and a cup of fizzy apple-flavoured liquid every day. Then kept the change to spend in the tuck shop. The silly school priced foods related to cost, not demand, so if you had, for eaxmple, chicken, potatoes and green beans, you wouldn't have enough for a drink other than water, never mind pudding and tuck shop!
Oh yuk! I remember that horrible pudding with the jam blob in the middle (the only edible part when youre hungry)

The pudding with the jam blob was the best thing at our school... Stir it real good and you had pink puddin !

I remember thinking it was a real treat to get pink custard with ya jam roly poly !
You mucky pup!

Once, but the penicillin cleared it up

Gypsy tart was delicious, one of my favourite school desserts. The apple after always used to make my teeth feel so clean. I actually had two attempts at making one last weekend, but my husband didn't like it, so its a bit pointless just making it for me. I used to love my school dinners. Cheese and Bacon whirls, Spotted Dick, Fruit Shortbread and that synthetic cream. I would love for someone to give me the recipe for the lemon sauce that goes with gingerbread sponge and the recipe for the sponge as well!!
