History of the World Series - 1903
After going at each other viciously for two years, the established National League and fledgling American League buried the hatchet, at least temporarily, in 1903 -- thanks in large part to the owners of the NL's Pittsburgh club and the AL's Boston team.

With their clubs apparently headed toward pennants, Pittsburgh's Barney Dreyfuss and Boston's Henry Killilea agreed during the 1903 season to stage a best-of-nine postseason playoff for the "world championship." The accommodation came in the wake of open hostilities -- punctuated player raids -- that had existed between the National League and American League since the junior's entry on the major-league scene in 1901.

Dreyfuss' Pirates appeared to be stellar representatives for the league, whose history dated to 1876. Pittsburgh had third consecutive pennant in '03. Boston also seemed a worthy competitor in this first modern World Series, having won the AL flag by 14 1/2 games

So your basically telling us something we already know. A bunch of Americans decided that a game between the two best teams in America makes a World Championship. It still doesn't make sense.
Don't the Toronto Blue Jays play in one of the leagues? Still, it's typical of the Amurrican sports that no-one else plays them or cares. Amurrican football = rugby for big jessies. "Ooh, ooh, we need a time out, my pinky hurts". Baseball = rounders. A game for schoolchildren and girls. Basketball = two teams of giants running back and forth for five or six hours.

World Series? Yeah, if the world ends at New Jersey.
I will accept it as being the world series when the Cubans, Japanese and South American teams are all invited to compete.
The NFL began from humble beginnings in 1892 a few years after baseball ,but has gone to become the undisputed #1 spectator sport in the US .

You can read about it here from its first game the present time .

Hey ExBob - if these foreign teams compete then they might actually win. We can't have that now, can we?

The Blue Jays play in the American League.
They play in the eastern division, the same as the Yankees.

yep, as i recall the Blue Jays won the world series back in 1992.

I think maybe other countries tried to train up teams to compete but they all fell asleep trying to watch some baseball to learn the game. Im pretty sure thats why Channel 5 currently has the world series on late at night, helps you get to sleep.

Basketball was actually invented by a Canadian too, like Hockey.

The other countries have absolutely no chance against the brilliant Americans. They tried it in the Olympic Games and the Yanks won hands down. You surely have to know that ? Isn't that why YOU emigrated from that poor little island, so you could brag to all your Limey friends that you now support World Championship teams...of course it is.

Well said Pollywolly.....

The local newspaper reported proudly that there were press representatives from 14 countries, showing what a "world" event it is. One of the "countries" listed was Puerto Rico, usually identified as a US possession...
*ahem* Ackcheloi, the reason I moved here was because I want my son (when he appears) to be able to show these Amurricans how to play football and lead them to the 2022 World Cup. Great plan, huh?

Baseball? We have that in England. Except we call it rounders and it's played by girls and schoolchildren.

Fourteen is quite a lot for two California teams. How many 'countries' do you think would be represented at a let's say...Manchester United v Glasgow Celtic match...let me answer that....two, England and Scotland. Fourteen countries, take a look at the globe, do you realize just how far they had to travel to get to the game ??

I think there would be more than 2, a lot more.

Man Utd currently are the biggest football club in the world, and has a following all over the globe, and Celtic also have a big fanbase.

There are tourists from all over the world who go to Old Trafford and also go to look at the Man Utd museum, there are even fans who come over on package trips including the USA Man Utd supporters club.

I think there are currently about 4 British people in each permiership side ?
UK football teams need european players like US hockey teams need Canadians hehe.
