Thanks everyone for the info on immigration at Newark and SS#.
I have passed through Newark once before and immigration was fairly quick, but we were the only international flight that came in at that time. My main concern was having to purchase another flight should there be a delay.
Incidentally the 90 minute hold up was in Miami although the French were responsible for most of it. Those in my line had either messed up the I-94 or not even filled it in at all!. So I guess I will be worried if I see Air France at the next gate!!.
Particular thanks to Kentgirl, the Newcomers site was very useful.
I believe that my passport will be given a stamp which counts as a temporary green card valid for one year while I wait on the card itself. It was only that I was unsure whether I can even apply for a job without an SS#.
Anyway thanks again for the info, at least now I can look forward to a life with Jucal without having to look to yet another airport goodbye.

The chances are if you miss your connection, they will try to get you on the next flight and not make you pay. Just make sure both flights know in advance that you are connecting with the other.
Actually Monster, you've just reminded me of something.

My dad died suddenly and I had to fly back to the UK, just a week after I'd already left England. After spending almost the whole day trying to get a flight back to England, I did eventually manage to get booked on one. I just didn't want to fly on a 14 hour flight to London then pick up a hire car and drive another 90 miles up the M40 to Coventry, so I chose to transfer at Frankfurt onto a British Airways flight to Birmingham.

Unfortunately, although Singapore Airlines had in my experience had always taken off on time from Changi airport, on this occassion it was waiting for a couple of passengers transferring on an incoming flight and our plane took off 45 minutes late. This had a serious repurcussion for me, as the lost time wasn't made up on the journey. I arrived at Frankfurt too late to make my way over to the next terminal, and missed my flight...indeed I couldn't even find anyone manning the BA desks!

I had to trek back to the original terminal and get Singapore Airlines to endorse my ticket as it was their fault I'd missed my flight - at this time I just burst into tears as I was sooo frustrated and given the run around by the airport help desk. I was then put on the next flight to Birmingham, with Lufthansa. Actually it was a very nice flight, spacious leather seats and much nicer than the BA plane I took on the return journey!

Marty, let's hope that your plane departs on time!
