Oh good, I got a reply!
Next questions Western or English? Dressage or trail? Jumping or team penning or just plain watching any of the above?

Mel...my Emily will watch *anything* horsey till the cows come home...!!! So, I admit I'm getting a little hooked too.
She just came to me yesterday with her letter to Santa...of course, (my eyes are rolling here!), all she wants for Christmas is a horse!!!!

Oh Mich,
I wished you lived closer! I would just love to let your Emily "help" with our horses.
I've been crazy about the beasts since I can remember and that love for them has never weakened. I know what it's like to want a horse as a kid, and not have one. Although I worked with them, I didn't actually own my own until I was an adult.
And, as you already know, my lifelong dream came true this year, when a foal I had planned was born.
Wilby is destined for Eventing, which is Dressage, Cross country and Show jumping. I may teach him to drive also, but I think he may be a little hot to put between the shafts of a cart.
Unfortunately, he does have a price on his head. Much as I love him, I cannot take him to his full potential. So, I will sell him to the right person who will take him there.
I would love to turn on the TV one day to watch the show jumping and see Wilby Sweet trot into the ring!! razz

Emily rides English and Ginger is a dressage (well ex-dressage) horse.
I can ride, not too keen on Western as I don't like the feet out stretched feeling, prefer an Australian saddle myself as it comes somewhere between English and Western.
But I don't ride much, prefer filming and photographing them. And believe it or not, grooming!
My sister rides English too, (and actually just came 4th in a dressage competition in the UK).
We're working out ways of landing tickets for the next Olympics for the Equestrian events.

Andrew,
if you get tickets can I sneak in your suitcase?
Seriously, I ride English, I feel trapped in a western saddle, don't know how quick I could "bale out" if I had to!
My son rides only western, and his graduation pressie from us was a new saddle.
I've never ridden in an Australian saddle, but hear they are very comfortable.
These days, I'm much like you, and keep my feet on the ground. I could spend hours just watching my mares doing their thing.
My seventh month old weanling, lives fifty miles away with a friend of ours. She has other babies he can play with, and as I'm not fit enough right now, she is "educating" him in the laws of behaviour!
We only get to see him two or three times a month now, but the separation will make it easier for me to part with him when the time comes for him to move on!
Maybe, one day in the future, you will see Wilby Sweet carrying a member of Team USA to a medal! He is a registered American Warmblood!
(Dream, dream, dream!)
Congratulations to your sister on her achievement!
Although I never actually hunted in England, I used to excercise hunters for their owners. Had some really exciting rides then! But, now on the rare occasion I saddle up, a gentle hack is just fine!
wink

Melhug, my sister in the UK hunts. I have mixed feelings about it, but have thoroughly enjoyed watching all the beautifully turned out horses and riders set out, then following in an off road vehicle across beautiful English countryside! Couldn't really get a taste for the quail egg and sherry combo they hand out before 'take off' though!!P
Unfortunately my sister can't participate this season as she has a new born baby smile

Maybe it's the name? My Emily is now drooling over your "girl" Andrew! grin
Mel -- wouldn't that be great if we could get together? We just struck a deal with our Emmie....told her that as long as she keeps doing well with school, that we'd pay for her to have riding lessons. There are a few stables around here who do that, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to arrange! The only black cloud on the horizon there is....oh lord, wait for it! She wants me to go as well!!!! eek
Can't you imagine that that would be a sight for sore eyes? (sigh) Oh well -- suppose I've scooted under fences and up trees before...!!! lol
