I got US citizenship earlier this year, so lost my green card. I might have to fly to the UK next month and haven't really got a clue about applying for a US passport (which I will need to get into/out of the USA, using my British passport would be really dum for several obvious reasons).
Anyone applied for a US passport? I live in north Arlington, just a couple of miles from DC. Where do I go? How quickly can I get a US passport? Can I pay to expedite my application for a US passport? tia
Go to any main post office for the forms, then take them back there with photos, fees and documentation. It takes 4 - 6 weeks. Check USPS online too.
UK - we downloaded the forms from

It depends on where you live as to where you need to go and do your passport application.
When I applied for my daughter's in WY it was at the main post office.
Here in MN I had to go to the Local Goverment building downtown. You'll need to go to somewhere like Sears on Kinko's to get your passport pictures done. There might be an adminstration fee depending on where you go to get it done.
All you need do is fill in your application, show your naturalisation certificate and pay - I think mine cost $60 when I did it earlier this year.
It took 3-4 weeks to come in the post.
You always have to apply in person for your first passport. Check the passport website, that someone has already posted. It will list the offices near you where you can go. The post office seems to be a popular place, but for my area, I had to go to the clerk of court.
The passport website tells you how long the application takes (I think 6 weeks). When you apply, the clerk will tell you when your passport will be ready. I found that it took a couple of weeks less than this. You can expedite the application and get the passport in two weeks, or take the application to one the the main passport processing centres and they can do it in a few days. Details are all on the website.
The main passport office for US passports is in D.C., phone the main D.C. post office. They should have number for them. They can expedite and process in 2 to 3 weeks. My passport was stolen once at Heathrow Airport. I travelled back here on a piece of paper stamped bye the US. I used the photo in my British passport so they could identify me.
