I am petitioning the INS on behalf of my mother who wants to live with me here in the USA. I filed the I-130 ages ago (we are at the end of the period when the INS are about due to respond). My question is anyone else gone through the process of getting a parent over here? Any pitfalls?

My mother successfully applied for an extension which is up next month, we are hanging on bated breath for some feedback from the INS to get some idea of what the next step is. I would rather she got the go ahead for a Green Card application and stay with me until I able to travel back with her to blighty. (I have a patent bar coming up next month which is clashing like mad with the end of her stay-extension).

I know my mum is having difficulty sleeping with the stress of not knowing if she will be able to stay (we are very close and back in blighty she lives alone, she has serious arthritis and needs help carrying shopping etc., here I get the shopping etc.).

Anyone been through the same thing? Tips wanted. tia

post it in the visa forum. smile
It looks like the process is the same as that for bringing a spouse over, so it should be straightforward. All the details are on the website of the US Consulate in London .

I have a website describing what the process was like for me 3 years ago, I130 London . Some of the details (eg form numbers) have changed slightly, and your mother will probably be subject to different vaccination requirements, due to her age. If you think the petition will be approved soon, your mother can start the application process anytime. You can download the form DS-230 part 1 and send it off to the embassy. The other thing to get in motion is applying for the police report, although it will be easier to wait until your mother is back in the UK to do this.
