Hi, i've recently met a women who is from Sydney Australia. She said that the Australian embassy hold coffee mornings once a month for Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans. Does anybody know if the British Embassy does something similar for us Brits. I live in the NYC and have found it virtually impossible to meet other Brits in the area. There are thousands here but no way of meeting up. Does anybody have any suggestions. Please help.
cheers Mel
I don't know of anything specifically for Brits, Mel. I belong to an expat group in a neighbouring town. It's an off-shoot of their Newcomers Group. Expats from the UK, Australia, South Africa, and all over the globe meet weekly in a local cafe for coffee and monthly for a daytime movie. Some Americans who have lived abroad also come. I've made some great friends through it.
You could start your own similar group of expats! Put a notice in your newspaper or library and see who shows up. Good luck!

We have a British coffee morning every two weeks. AFAIK, it's all done by word of mouth.
I think if you come across another Brit, you just have to ask them, in a most unBritish way, what events they go to or if they would like to join you in setting something up.
I'm a Brit on Long Island. I would love a Brit coffee morning. I know a couple of others locally who might be interested too.
There have been a couple of Long Islanders pass through this board, but have gone again. There is only UKMocha and me who are regulars on here.
I have met a couple of Brit families here who are just not interested in getting together.
Where in NYC do you live, Mel?
I work in NYC and live about 25 mins away - I've also found it difficult to meet fellow Brits.
I found a potentially good site called Meet-up that designates thousands of locations all over America for expats to meet up - you just type in your zip code then you can vote for where you want to meet. You can then meet up on the 3rd Monday of each month at 8pm for example. Only drawback is that only 35 people are signed up - in the whole of the US, which makes it almost obsolete - the chance that any of the 35 people actually live close enough to meet is very unlikely. Still, the concept is good.
Maybe you should start your own social group - I'm sure there would be takers in our area - I'd definitely be interested.
Cheers, Em
Britem, do you have the web address for that site, Meet-up. I wouldn't mind having a look.
Mellie, depending on how close to the CT border you are, the CT crowd meet up regularly too. smile
Sure - it's http//brit.meetup.com
Hi, thank you for your responses. I've just joined the 'Meet-up' site. I've opted for the starbucks on W 92nd street if anybody is around. Would love to meet up with the Long Island branch of brits and Britem if you are around anytime. I live in Manhattan on the upper west side. I already have an English and New Zealand friend so could make it a party. Would be great to do some sort of meet up once a month or something. I would be happy to arrange it people show some interest. Maybe organise some bangers and mash evenings!!!
cheers mel
Mellie, have you seen the get together forum. There is a NYC day being organised. Maybe you would like to join them. They are a great bunch of people who are going.
I think they are organising it for October. smile
Hi Mellie!
If you're UWS, then you're not too far from Lisa and Jim's in New Haven. We live about an hour's drive north west of there just above Danbury. We could have a get together too!

hi BritEm thanks for the imformation, i signed on, i wasn't sure it would apply here in little ole santa barbara ca. but sure enough ....meeting place just minutes away.....AWSOME....june
Good luck, Joonmoon. Here's to a great meet-up.
I'm not sure how this all works out though. Here, where we live, no one has registered with the group, yet they have picked out three venues for the meetings. I'd be game for it, but Mondays at 8pm aren't the best time for me. smile
The site is a great idea, though. Sending enthusiasm vibes...
I have just signed up too - and I believe I recognised a name or two there - including one in my immediate vicinity lol
