Does anyone know where I can get Maysan Extra Hot Curry Paste? Can't find it anywhere, either in shops or online. I even wrote to the company in Newcastle, but no joy. I brought a few boxes back with me, but expect I will soon be in curry withdrawal before too long. It won't be a pretty sight. cry
Have you tried an Indian shop in your area?
If your in california ther should be at least one good Asian deli near you!
Thanks for the suggestions, guys, but nope. I live in a VST (Very Small Town) in the far north of California, full of cowboys and other assorted Wild West creatures (the biggest event in these parts is the annual rodeo). The nearest Indian shop is almost 100 miles away -- in Yuba City, where one can find the largest Sikh population in the US. But alas, Maysan Curry is Chinese. ???
The Problem is that you are looking for the actual Maysan product. Maysan are a very small company in Ponteland, Tyne & Wear, who probably aint recognized very much elsewhere even in the UK. As a North East Curry Connoisseur, I have heard of them though.
Maybe you might want to experiment with some alternate pastes until you find one that's comparable.
A lot of places in the USA import the Sharwoods stuff, which isn't ideal, but needs must when the devil vomits in your kettle.
I prefer to make my pastes and bases from scratch and preserve or freeze them.

You can get PATAK's curry pastes and sauces over here. They are from an industrial estate near Wigan! Saves me having to cart it all over from the UK. All I need to bring over are poppadums and Sharwoods mango chutney.

Sharwoods mango chutney and poppadoms (and lots of other grown-up British food) can be found in Cost Plus World Market, a very interesting little shop.
Richie Eewwwww!!! Devil vomit. Time for a new kettle, methinks. Got a good recipe you'd like to share (for curry, I mean, not for devil vomit)?
Ameriscot and debsowerby I've seen Patak's and Sharwoods here and there. Maybe I'll give them a try. I'll also have a peek at the Cost Plus Online Market.
Thanks, all. smile
I use a book I've had for the best part of 12 years
Curry Club
250 Favourtie Curries & Accompaniments
by Pat Chapman
It takes you through the stages of making Curries from start to finish. It can be a 'ball-acher' of a process but better than standing in the rain, waiting for tickets for a Take That tribute band, on a long winter night, in Liverpool.
If you can't find it I would gladly loan you mine.
Cheers

ROFL From devil vomit in your kettle to Take That tribute bands ... LOVE your analogies, Richie.
I'll poke around and see if I can find that book. Thanks for the advice, and the offer of a loan.
Many thanks to all for your suggestions.
Scrumpy (or Natch where I come from lol )
We're in CA are you located...
There are so many Indian Supermarkets in the Bay Area it's incredible..
Let me know and I'll see what I can dig up for you. I never usually buy ready made curry powders, as I prefer to make up my own from scratch and thus I tend to buy all my spices in whole form and toast/grind them as I need them..

We're at the top of the Central Valley, about a 4 hour hour drive (give or take 1/2 hour) from San Francisco.

Would that be up near Redding?
I also use these spices too, albeit supply is somewhat sketchy, they do now have worldwide shipping for their spices and pastes etc
