Finally..
Here is a traditional baked bean recipe that is an old New England baked bean recipe (that tastes not unlike the Heinz version, or pretty close).
If you like a little bit more liquid in you beans add a bit more half way through the cooking..
1lb dried navy beans
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 packed tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/4 cup unsulphured molasses
1 tablespoon Colemans dried mustard
1/2 cup rum (optional) grin
1 1/2 cups water (approx)
4 oz of thick bacon
Wash and check beans over, place them in a large pot, cover with water and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour, drain.
Preheat the oven to 300f.
Combine the beans with the onion in large tight lidded casserole.
Combine the sugar, molasses, mustard, rum grin and water in a bowl, mix well and pour over the beans.
Cust the bacon into 1 inch pieces and place on top of the bean mix.
Cover with the lid, and bake for 2 hours. Checking periodically and adding more water if necessary to prevent them from drying out.
After 2 hours, reduce the heat to 275f and continue to bake for about 2 hours longer, or until the beans are tender (make sure to check and add more water if necessary).
Remove the bacon, dice finely and return to the pot, check for seasoning and voila!
