We are intending to move to Florida from London next year. All relevant issues have been dealt with, but we have experienced little luck in pinning down medical insurance which seems to be aimed at businesses (HMO) or at part payment only (Major Medical). Can anyone offer information concerning any organisation in Florida which might be able to help us? The Americans we have spoken to don't seem to be able to cope with the idea of immigrant foreigners who are not employed.
little experience in this matter but think you may be up the creek without a paddle -it seems that even US citizens who are temporarily unemployed have difficulty and great expense in securing medical insurance.
Suggest you get as much insurance in Britain as you can before you come -things over here tend to be easier face to face (or at least in the same country), so it may make life easier if you have a breathing space -can you take out one of those annual travel policies?
Thank you for your reply. We have annual travel insurance already but these types of insurance almost invariably have a time limit per trip - usually no more than 60 days at most.
Look back here Wednesday or Thursday...
A friend of mine has had problems with this, he has just gotten insurance here in the USA from an internet based company (Nice price too from what I recall).
As soon as I get to see him (Wednesday or Thursday he returns from vacation / holliday)I will get the details of who / what n' where to go....

Hello
We have no employer-provided insurance and have set up our own HMO Individual policy. Be warned, the insurance companies put you in the same high risk category as all the other self-employed people in your state, and you pay much more than an employer would have to.
In New Jersey the cheapest rate was around $680 per month for a married couple, and from January it's going up to $800 per month. This is a typical annual increase, and only covers doctors' fees - if you are on medication you have to pay 50% of the actual price.
So if you don't have an employer to pick up the tab, be warned - we were shocked at how expensive health care is over here.
PS
Companies to try are Aetna US Healthcare, Cigna, Blue Cross. However they are huge and byzantine in their workings - it took me about 6 weeks after arriving here to find the right number to call (it varies by state) and a competent person to handle my query.

My company uses Aetna and this is their link:

We had a brief period when we had no payroll deduction for our health insurance but found out this morning that I will have to pay $28 each pay period now for Frank and I. $36 for a family. Which isn't bad of course, but it was nice not having any payroll deduction for a while.
Just stay away from Health Net - They're expensive and useless.
Perosnally, our company offers Kaiser (yay!), Cigna and something else.
Cigna are okay, but Kaiser are simply the best imho. Trouble is, the nearest Kaiser to us is in Gilroy..A bit of a trek..

Thank you for your replies. Has anyone any experience or advice regarding "Major Medical" insurance?
