OK culinary marvels and astute retail-shoppers alike...

Short of raising my own pig and slaughtering it (which would be a shame as I really am not that keen on pork), is there any way at all of getting decent bacon in the US?

Apologies if this has been done before (it hasn't on this page smile )

Try http//www.britishbacon.com for mail order bacon/sausage etc.

Super Stop & Shop sell Shannon Irish Back Bacon and it's rather good. In fact we've had bacon butties for our lunch! Yum!

PS yes, this has been covered previously!

Thanks Debs.

Is back bacon the one we recognize as that , er, oval shape? you know, like a normal bit of bacon as opposed to that long thin strip of fat with a microscopic bit of meat hidden in there somewhere?
yoinks. $8 per pound
Yes, back or middle cut bacon is what we used to enjoy back home on our butties!

I know it's expensive by mail order but if you speak to your Stop & Shop manager and ask him to order Shannon Irish Back Bacon for you and see what he says. If you have a freezer you could buy the whole box!! Bacon freezes very well BTW.

Do you know if there are any other Brits in your area? I'm sure they would patronise S & S for the bacon too!

I pay $3.99 per pack of the Shannon bacon at S & S.

where do you live ParsnipNose?
Our local grocery store has it's own smoke house and you can buy fairly good smoked or salt cured bacon there.

I do pick through their packs though because it can vary from nearly all fat, as most American bacon is, to very lean! eek

The lean bacon has a lovely flavour and is fairly thick cut so if you don't like it crisp you can at least get something for your money without a mouthful of fat!
This usually runs around $1.99 per pound. They sell their ends and pieces very cheaply too.

I love to steam a little lean bacon with zucchini, frozen peas and some fresh chopped mint thrown in for good measure. Makes a delicious side dish! razz
Andy,

Well I have been through the same thing and was unable to buy British bacon anywhere near me. The nearest place I found is a place 5 hours drive away in Denver and they sell it for like $4 a pound for Irish Bacon which is basically the same stuff. Sadly for me there are no Stop and Shops near me but if there were they sound like a good bet. I miss the bacon too, but you need the beans and the sausages too!!!

You can order it by mail but it will cost an arm and a leg. Best thing to do is to just call into placs that sell strange stuff and see if they can order it in.

Good Luck
I can buy frozen Irish bacon for a reasonable price. It's not good quality, though - full of water so it foams up when you fry it.

I think it is worth experimenting with some of the country hams that are available. I found one, which doesn't look like bacon rashers, but it fries up really well and makes a passable bacon sarny.

Good bacon sandwiches are something I am leaving for when I go home. None are quite like my mum's grin (Scottish rolls and Scottish bacon and tonnes of butter).

Streaky American bacon is fine for cooking. The Parma Ham from Costco is excellent and really cheap too.
Hey midgeure
Whats the name of the place in Denver for bacon.
I can almost taste the bacon Buttie now YUM
