I have a question for you World Cup experts

While watching the Spain/Ireland game today, the ref called two players, one irish, one Spanish together to talk to them.

My Q is, do the World Cup refs have to speak fluently, the languages of the players on the field? razz
Melhug, that is a really good question. One that I don't have the answer to but still, a good question grin
Funny you mention this.

I think the ref was from Sweden and at one point, I could hear what he was shouting at the players. It did not sound like English to me but it could have been his accent.

I think a lot of the time, they use their own language but it is the body language and facial expression that conveys the true meaning of their words. If it is serious, the card colour takes care of any misunderstandings.

There must be a 'universal' language for refs though as they still have to consult their assistants (linesmen/women!) from time to time.
Yes he was Swedish and that's what prompted my question. Seeing him "discuss" the actions of two players from two opposing teams, made me wonder if either understood exactly what he was saying.

It must be difficult sometimes, despite the red and yellow cards, if, maybe, a player doesn't understand why it was given.

The linesmen being different nationalities adds another dimension to my question.
