Hiya,
Have a good job opportunity in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I've done a bit of research but really need a pointer regarding an issue I have - what is there to do there in your spare time?!!
In the UK, I love going for walks in country parks, playing sports, taking the kids out, museums, the library etc. I've heard (I don't know if this is true, hence my question), that the Malays don't really do that kind of stuff, so it's not really available out there.
Which really puts me off.
Any pointers please?

wel the answer is the same as the one regarding those leaving the uk to come to america .
wieght up the oppurtunity and get your prorities right .
does the continuation of your present social life outwieght the oppurtunity of a new challenge and the thrill of experiancing something new ?
if you decide you dont want the chance to adventure and explore pastures new , dont go.....
not a hard choice in my mind .
Hi,
Not sure I agree with your train of thought to be honest.
The job will be good, but if I will be totally bored out there then I wont go.
But if there are things to do out there then I will go.
So, for me, the eveing and weekend activities do play a big part.
we have a poster called gwilo who may be able to help -he's been out there for a while and seems very happy and settled. Perhaps you could pm him (=send him a private message).
Welcome to Britnet, by the way

In my experience the things to do outside of work have varied every where I've been, and that's both in the UK and overseas. In all the places I've lived growing up (military) and the 4 places I've lived since leaving home I can honestly say there is only one that I didn't like -but neither did any of the other Air Force members and families who lived there either
From reading what you have written of the things you like doing you'd find enjoyment exploring the local area and culture and I can imagine that could be very interesting in a place like Malaysia.
I'll ask you this though; if the job op was in the UK, or even Europe, would you be having the same doubts? and the follow on to that is... if it's such a good job op would it be worth putting up with the possible hardships for a couple of years? Working overseas is a great opportunity which ever way you look at it and your children will gain a much broader outlook on life being overseas for a couple of years than they will do if they grow up in the UK.
I've spent most of my adult life outside of the UK and while I miss home I wouldn't have passed up the experience for anything. The wistful looks on the faces of family and friends when they say "I wish..." or "How do you do it?" is enough to make me realise time and again how lucky I am to have had the opportunity and the guts to take it.
It's difficult to answer the question or give advise in general terms because we are all different and all have different requirements and ideas. The idea of working with absolutely no social life for a couple of years may be acceptable to some and absolutely appalling to others, I'd put myself in the latter category.
I have answered blueskies in a PM but for general knowledge, there are more than enough activities to keep more or less anyone with any type of desire occupied in Malaysia and that applies especially to KL (Kuala Lumpur) In general Malaysians are not really health concious but are becoming more and more so, there are huge parks and public areas that are now becoming the "in thing" for the burgeoning "healthy lifestyle" types.
If anyone ever decides to come over for a visit, let me know, I'm more than happy to show you around and share what I know about the place.
