I went to Wal*Mart to buy a carpet cleaner (one of those steam cleaner type things). Paid $188 for it.

Got it home. Noticed the accessory box was open. Checked the pre-treatment bottle, it was half empty.

The power cable was just shoved in the box.

Finally when I get the thing itself out and look underneath, it's covered in crap.

This is obviously a used product sold as new.

What would you do? I'm on the phone now and asked for a manager to see what he's going to do about it. I want to clean my carpet tonight and I don't want to have to pick this stuff up and take it back, yet I don't pay full price for used items.
I'd just pack it back up and take it back.

I thought Best Buy were selling me an opened product when I got my steam cleaner but someone had just torn open the box to look inside. The rest was intact and still sealed in bags.

You could make a bit of a fuss and maybe get some freebie but that's down to the manager or customer service rep I guess.
Being Walmart I'd guess your chances at customer service are slim.
What was the outcome? I would have taken it back there and then, but I live 5 mins from Walmart.

Alternately, use it, then take it back. take pictures of it first. Only tell them you also used it if they ask.
Take it back and talk to the manager face to face you get better results that way .
i lot of employees in many stores put items on selves that are returned by customers , it a combination of not caring and laziness ( paparwork ) .
i did memtioned last week to look and see if the item had been opened but in this case it would,nt have been noticed untillyou got home ...
i would ask for a discount on a replacement item for my trouble .

On a slightly differant subject we have just had hardboard floors installed in some rooms but still have carpet in others .
My questions is does anybody else have this and what would be a good cleaner to buy that does both carpet and hardboard floors ??
No question in my mind. Put it back in the box and take it back.
The result is in!

I called the manager, he said that he'd give me a 10% discount since it was used. This would work out to $18 so that wasn't too bad. However I couldn't put it together since half the screws were missing.

The thing got packed back in the box (for the most part) and returned to the store. I got another off the shelf that I checked before leaving. No discount through since I got a new one.

Of course, the time it takes to drive there and back, find a manager at 1am in the morning, pack and unpack. My time is valuable and I feel I should be compensated for the waste. Oh well.
You already got your discount by shopping at Walmart. Next time you'll check before leaving. There are more painful and more irritating learning experiences. Still sucks, though. But at least your Vacuum does too.
Because I work with patients on isolation for MRSA, VRE and much, much worse. I would have dipped myself in bleach after opening that box!

It could have been used on a carpet used as a litter box for all you knew. I am glad that you didn't use it anyway and then return it, there isn't enough steam cleaner liquid in the world to make me want to contaminate my carpets with someone elses muck.

Plain water stings my hands from washing them 200 times a shift. But I'll hit the germicidal soap pump for all it's worth anyway.
Well this $188 cleaner is crap. If nothing else, I'll still have bits of Peanut in the carpet to mind me of her |
yeah the cheaper cleaners aren't up to children and animal wear. We bought top of the range for our second one. And we are not top of the range people, usually.
No Dyson, no comment....
Just having had our living room & dining room carpets replaced with hardboard flooring we didnt have a cleaning that performed the job of cleaning them satisfactory .

so of we went to the stores and purchased a brand new machine ( dyson DC animal ) .
we got it on a *pay in 12 months same as cash * deal as it seems to do a excellant job on the carpets, tiles and hardboard floor .

not cheap at $400 plus dollars but we needed to make sure our new floor was not compromised by the old machine , it still works and will go into the annual yard sale in late april /early may ....
don't really like walmart really customer service is sh*t. A friend of mine took her car for an oil change. They put wrong oil in and screwed up the engine etc did they comp her? nope they even tried telling her they never serviced the car.
in business establishments, there is this reminder..

"count your change before leaving the counter"

it also goes with purchased goods. check first before going straight home. it's not always that they can readily replace the item or give you a discount. some of them have policies like "no exchange".

just be responsible buyer, not only as a customer.
