The sooner people realise there is no place for religious laws within any civilised society, the better.
If people, whether Jewish, Muslim, Christian etc. want to follow their beliefs, they can within their own homes and assuming it doesn't break any of the secular laws our countries have in place.
However, they have no rights to try to force it into mainstream, generally secular societies.
Rowan was probably trying to get in with the Muslims but has made a terrible error - uniting both secular and Christian people in Britain who can think of nothing more repulsive than primitive Moslem laws being adopted into British law.
History proves that laws pre-dated the Bible, the Torah, the Koran etc. We have no need to think that so-called divine texts have any bearing within our modern societies and should leave them for nations that are still living in the Dark Ages.

For the record, there are already sharia courts in England. They act in marriage situations, not always well. There are also Jewish courts too.
His point was that whatever your religion, it should be taken into account when you go into an ordinary law court.
What is the point of asking someone to swear on the bible if they're not a Christian.
The courts need updating, much like after the Lady Chatterley trial, famous quote around somewhere of the judge saying something to the effect of, " one wouldn't want the servants reading this filth. " As if after the war anyone except the privileged few had servants.
I think he was working toward a few changes in the Sharia court, frinstance, one man equals one woman, not two women equal one man, not a woman is incapable of making her mind up and needs an elder male to advise her. If a woman comes out of hospital after being beaten by her husband, in a sharia court, she's asked what she did to anger her husband. He is not reprimanded and the fact she went to hospital is the greatest shame which she brought on her family. I don't agree in having one law for one and another set of laws for someone else, based upon their religion. Williams said he thinks it is dangerous to have only one set of laws and expect all citizens to comply but I think he is very mistaken.
I know that Moslem law is permitted in certain instances in the UK but I think even that is going too far. If you live in a nation with (let's face it) secular laws, then you must comply with them or face the legal repercussions. Claiming they don't match up to your religion is a pretty poor excuse and where does the line get drawn?
The hard solution is to accept that Britain is progressive and expects all its citizens to follow its one code of laws and the easy solution is to understand that Moslem nations would NEVER entertain the thought of being so accommodating.
