I'm trying to lose a little weight. Have been for a while... but new year brings a new influx of people to the gym and they all have different ideas about what is healthy. And how best to exercise. etc.
This year, I am amazed by the number of people exercising in their street clothes. I don't mean "not brand-name specially designed helps you double the calorie and dollar output while keeping a sexy profile $10/stitch" stuff, but jeans and snow boots and and and....
Also, people don't have water or sports drinks anymore. I always have 1 bottle of water. last year there were people with huge gallon things. has the hydration theory gone out of style? And did we ever reach a conclusion on that? Do regular drinks count towards your daily water intake/ What should your daily water intake be?
Do you exercise at all? What to you wear? What do you drink? Do watch your diet too?
This week has been my best week ever exercise-wise. On Monday I did 2.25 miles on the elliptibal cross-trainer in 30 mins, then swam half a mile (half breast half free). on Tuesday, half an hour/7 miles on an exercise bike, then 2 hours marshalling a swim meet. On Wednesday an hour figure skating, Today 2.5 miles on the eliptical and 5/6 mile swim. But the diet's been crappy. i had been doiing really well on cutting down on the beer, but this week not so much. It seems exercise demands a beer reward....
I don't drink the "recommended" amount of water. As water. i maybe manage half what i should. But I drink buckets of tea, diet coke, (beer) etc and the massage therapists i see always comment on how well hydrated I seem to be, so i guess I subscribe to the "it doesn't matter what form your water comes in" school of thought regarding hydration. (I get a massage about every three weeks in the student clinic at the local school. So i get lots of different people and their keen to share their onbservations. And it's cheap ;)
How about you? And does my bum look big in this post?
I exercise about 4 to 5 times a week at the gym in condo building, play indoor football and do judo twice a week. I drink water during and after my work-outs about as much as my body seems to need.
I watch what I eat, no junk food and mainly veggies and chicken and fish. As I drink a ton, if I didn't do this I'd be a right sight.
I play indoor soccer 2 - 3 times a week and was taking 1.5 mile walks most days although I have been skipping that recently for one reason or another.
I drink about 1.5 litres of water a day and have a bottle of Gatorade during and after I play soccer and finish the rest the next day if I didn't drink it all in the game.
Food wise, I eat far too much red meat, not very much chicken but otherwise am pretty healthy. I don't eat sugary snacks much and during the day, I snack on yogurts, apples and raisins.
I drink a few beers each week but as they're generally very light beers like Miller, they probably don't count.
I gave up Pepsi a couple of years ago and only have it as a treat if I go out to eat somewhere - otherwise, I just stick with water.
I have an annual physical with my doctor and have never had any problems. He encouraged me to play more soccer so I joined another team and play a few times a week, instead of just once now.
I walk and cycle in street clothes, really because I think that when I go for a walk there's no reason to wear sports clothes. After all, in the UK I used to walk almost everywhere and didn't wear sports clothes. I hate spandex cycling shorts so they're out too, but I do own two pairs.
As the winter evenings got darker earlier I started to use the exercise TV things on Comcast. Yes, my butt did get lifted and firmer doing all those squats and lunges with Dove Rose but it actually looks bigger now. roll
I do not belong to a gym because I can't afford it but we have a small gym at work as well as a swimming pool.
I do the free skate with Lucy before her skating lessons and actually thought about Monster the other day as I was eyeing the sign up board for adult skating lessons.
I'm learning a Mazurka! eek
every morning i wake up get out of bed and walk to the bathroom .
go into the kitchen and pore myself a few cups of coffee . using both hands and some leg and body movements .
later get up from my cozy chair to pick up the remote to turn on the tv . exercise my hand and arm by flicking thou the channels . to make sure both arms get equal use i change hands to use remote and go thou the same motions .
if I think i need more exercise i walk down to the end of the road to pick up the mail .
GYM whats that is it a new way to abbreviate the name JIMMMY / JAMES ????
lol lol lol lol lol
I use Rodney Yee's Am yoga, DVD, mainly stretching and core strengthening stuff daily. If I stop I feel it within a week and my bum triples in size. (Quickest way to reduce the beer shelf bum)
Walk daily, sometimes twice if it's not raining, just a fifteen minute brisk walk.
Drink water, lots of it. No sodas, hate corn syrup, makes my joints swell and creak. Hard for the liver to process and my liver has seen some good times over the years so I treat it gently
Garden a lot, not planting six packs, but digging, growing from seed, chopping stuff down and such, still looks overgrown, but I tell everyone I like my garden a bit blowzy.
Red meat once a week, chicken and fish and veggies the rest of the time with treats of ice cream, Hagen Daz Amazon chocolate at the mo. At present am working my way thru the Twelve Months of Monastery Salads. This guy is good and his food tasty. I like raw food.
Rarely eat fruit, can't process it.
Dangerous food for me is cheese. If I don't put it back in the fridge, I eat it. Especially French cheeses, Brie and such, healthy cheeses. Who'd have thunk!
Don't belong to a gym, can't keep my balance on treadmills, same reason I hate airports. If the ground beneath me is moving I expect it to be an earthquake, anything else is just confusing.
Oh and I bought some weights, apparently at my age it's necessary, however I think unloading a quarter cord of wood every month is sufficient, but just in case sometimes I carry the weights when walking.
Basically I just keep moving. If I don't I freeze up. Not a good thing. Besides I'm working on the theory that by the time I'm an OAP I'll be able to outrun the obese and nasty teenagers we have around here. D
II gave up Pepsi a couple of years ago and only have it as a treat if I go out to eat somewhere - otherwise, I just stick with water.
.
I'm the same with Bensons. I gave them up about two years ago when I moved here and now only indulge as a treat about once every two months, mainly if I'm really having a lock session at the local bar.

i'd been getting quite concerned by the lack of everyday exercise i'd been getting up to starting work last april, but then i cycled everyday and spent the day at work lifting stuff and flying about like a blue arsed fly. since then i've lost close to fourty pounds-i'd gotten to be a right fat bastard. in the summer keeping hydrated is a big problem at work and you end up consuming at least a litre and a half of water every day. lots of people drink gatorade but thats nasty. or mountain doo or pepsi.
we recently moved into a really boho neighbourhood that values community and local buisnesses-which is something totally unexpected in the US- so now, even though I have to drive to work, I can leave the car at home during the day and walk eveywhere.
whilst we were travelling we'd use the gyms and stuff in the apartment complexes we were staying but i never really got used to that. nothing beats putting your feet to the sidewalk and putting in a couple of miles just wandering around.
since we've had two feet of snowfall in the last week lots of exercise shovelling and digging the car out at 3AM to get to work.
impossible to get a beergut on the beer here unless you drink it by the crate- and thats just not going to happen. i'll stick to gin.
We are terrible about getting active. Since moving to England last year, I have put on a STONE cry . I really would like to excercise, but I have rheumatoid arthritis in both feet and both hands so swimming is my best bet and I cannot be bothered to drive all the way into town to use the pool. When we move back to the States we are both getting bikes and going to start riding regularly.
I have also just given up drinking alcohol for Lent so maybe I may lose some from that. It certainly can't hurt.

That's a cowards way out. :D

1) you can get bikes in the UK and it's much nicer to ride there, in the main
2) how much booze did you drink? If not much, It'll make no differernce, if a lot, you're gonna snack like crazy....
Sorry to be a downer and all, but hey -it is Lent, you're supposed to be miserable, right? ;)
I KNOW I can get bikes here... wink I'm not that stupid(usually). BUT, we will be moving back to the states sometime soon and it would be silly to purchase them now...and then pay to move them.
I did drink quite a bit. Seems to be the thing to do. Plus, when you know the pub owners and they let you stay after hours and drink for free lol its easy to drink too much. Was lots of fun last night watching everyone else get sozzled. Didn't have to worry about how to get home either as I was sober from drinking club soda all night. What a party animal I am.
A few years ago, I stretched out my activities to fill my day. Now I'm trying to shorten them so as to squeeze more in. I'm trying to make it routine to visit the gym and pool on alternate days, plus I've joined a couple of clubs to keep up my mental health, I'm the facilitator for a discussion of the election system next Thursday, that should be lively.
With my emphysema, my problem on the cross trainer is to raise my heart rate without getting into oxygen lag. The power machines don't give me too much of a breathing problem though.
