I was already an adult when Grange Hill started, but in the days of four-channel television and nothing on for adults before the News, I used to come home from work and watch Grange Hill. I can't imagine getting hooked on an American children's drama, but Grange Hill back then was always good. it says a lot for the calibre of the writers and the production itself. I never thought it looked like a scary place, so I'm surprised to read that the kids who watched it did.

There were some scary characters, like Booga Benson who used to terrorize Tucker.
At the time I was watching, I was still in primary school so I thought once I started comprehensive school there would be Booga Bensons lurking behind every locker.
When I finally got there, it really wasn't the case.
Nobody at my school got hooked on "smack" like Zammo.

Wow. What's really funny is my school really did get evacuated while the bomb squad had to remove an unexploded WWII mortar bomb. Some Clever Dick brought it in for Show and Tell.
