Does anyone know if I can obtain an SSN which states that I DONT WANT TO WORK on an F1 visa. I have no intentions of working but I want to be able to get a cell phone, tv (I can only get satelite where I live) and drivers licence etc.
If I can, how do I go about it?
you can usually use your TIN (don't tell them it's a TIN). If you don't have a TIN, you can probably get one fairly easily) TINs were created for pretty much this purpose.
Not sure if you can get a DL on a TIN any more, though. no harm in trying.
If that fails, sorry, you'll have to get your hubby to do it for you. Is he a brit or a yank?
*TIN = Tax Identification Number
I just read up about TIN, its all very complicated -?
My husband is British, he's come over with me on an F2 Visa so he hasn't got one either!
I don't know any other british students either to ask them what they do (
Yes you can apply for a SSN on af F1 visa.
Your school's international center should be able to help you.
I had to fill out all the paper work then go and sit at the SSN issuing office for a few hours to prove my identity and go through my documents.
It took a while for the number to come through.
Ok I'll check it out.
I thought I could only apply if I wanted to work.
Will find out who I ask in the University.
Thanks for your help.
Been told by uni that I can't get a SSN.
I can however apply for the TaxID like Monster said.
Thought Id update incase anyone ever had the same question!
Sorry Alz,
I guess I got my SSN because I was a grad student and they had to pay me a stipend.
I didn't think of that before.
The International Center at my University were very helpful though in getting all the paper work for me and explaning how to go about the filing.
Hope you get the same information.
Good luck
