I'm just a bit fed up of people putting down the Eighties. It just happens to be the decade of my youth and I loved every bit of it.

I especially detest the derogatory comments directed at the music. All I can say is that the Eighties puts this teeney-bopper-poppy-I think I'm going to throw up music- of today to shame.

I mean, c'mon what does N'Sync have on Duran Duran when it comes to pure sex appeal, looks and really danceable poppy tunes. I'll just like to add here that John Taylor was and is just one of the most beautuful people alive! (Now I'm sounding teeny-bopperish!)

I'd crush Britney's cds (then burn and throw the ashes into the ocean). How is SHE a pop icon compared to Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde and the like? ???

It's not just the music either. I remember the frightening 'big hair' eek but I also LOVED the bob. Remember the versatility.

Yes, I know that I wore those god-awful stirrup pants (only you true Eighties girlies will remember those!) Luckily they gave birth to leggings and the fact that you felt comfortable wearing them without trousers was monumental.

I suppose I'm hankering after a time filled with nostalgic memories but the naivity of that decade stands out the most. The Nineties came along and crushed all that.

Perhaps it's just growing up and seeing the world through adult eyes that's the real difference. Perhaps there was something really special about that decade.

I think there's a little bit of truth in both.

Didn't Debbie Harry try making a comeback just recently? She wasn't my cup of tea.

I have a soft spot for the eighties too, ukmocha! I was more of a Jam, Clash, Elvis Costello kinda girl(I'm older than you so the music is earlier!). But, it was the decade I met my husband, graduated, first lived abroad, had my two daughters, bought that first house and car, first dog etc, etc......I know I cried when that decade ended smile
Just a thought, wonder what we'll refer back to the present decade as ???
Enjoy 'em all I say,
Jan
I too loved the 80's especially the music. Duran Duran were my favourites. Used to love watching top of the pops with my Dad just to hear him ask if that was a girl or a fella! Boy George, Marilyn(remember him?) then Annie Lennox & a couple of other girls who looked more like guys. I still get to listen to it a lot as our 14yr old likes to watch VH1 when they have 80's bands on. She also listens to our old tapes too. It's much better than the stuff she likes to buy on CD, & which we now carefully monitor. It just seemed to be a happy time to be around, or is that just me.

Yikes UKmocha, I remember the stirrup pants from the late 50's early 60's and Yes I wore them in the 80's too! As to the music, Elvis Costello, Blondie, the Police, Wham, and the guys with the moody black and white videos in Prague, who were they?
Hi, this is my first post here. Is the group you are thinking of Ultravox?

Yeah Morph (Welcome!) I would have said Ultravox too.

I heard that, after much debate, they are to be called 'the naughties'.
Don't know if that's official though.

I LOVED the eighties. All the big hair, makeup and gaudy clothes were a celebration of what it was to be young and alive.(without getting too Sharon'n'Trace here!) I did go through a phase of listening to The Smiths and Morissey, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, wearing black clothes and being "serious" though.

I remember there was a big market for drinks in strange colours with strange sounding names Taboo and Mirage for example. I think they were girlie drinks but we drank'em.

Some good tunes and bands were born in the eighties, though possibly it was the beginning of the prefabricated band. Can you say Stock, Aitkin and Waterman?

Mark my words, in about five to ten years those stylish days will be launching themselves on the next generation of unsuspecting teens.
LOVED Ultravox and yes I also went through what we referred to as the 'gothic' look inspired by bands like The Cure.

My drink of choice was more the Diamond White and Cinzano and lemonade type. Cheap but pleasantly enjoyable. I still get weird looks when I try to order a cinzano here eek

Cheers!
There were some real nasties too, though! -remember ra-ra skirts, legwarmers and tanktops? And black and cerise seemed to be the in colours for years (ouch!) But there were also fantastic colours of nail varnish and lipstick available (blues, greens...) which disapperaed in the 90s (back now though grin )

I think that there's definitely a "looking back" factor because I hated a good proportion of the music at the time (Duran Duran for a start), but hearing it now makes me nostalgic and it sounds so much better than today's teen pop. If I had the energy and ever went out, "The Reflex" might even get me on the dance floor today where as it used to be guaranteed to send me running razz

I agree,

At the time I was not a big fan of much eighties music, but looking back now, it definitely brings on a sense of Nostalgia.

If the Eighties were you then you have to check this site out-
