I'm thinking of relocating to the UK after I have finished my postgraduate studies here. My concern is about employment. I know in the UK they do background checks, most of which also include credit checks. My question is what will the credit check be based on? My NI number? I'm a bit worried because I filed for bankruptcy in the states not too long ago and was wondering if my credit and bankruptcy in the US will be assessed during the background check here. Do I also have to state that I've filed for bankruptcy even though it was in the US? Thanks in advance for the help!
your credit record generally doesn't transfer, no matter how much you may want it to.

You are a returning Brit rather than a USC looking to emmigrate?

why would they do credit checks? I thought that was the US, not the UK.

The only true way to find out is suck it and see -I think you're putting the cart before the horse worrying about this. get the application forms, then worry when you see the questions.
It's EXTREMELY rare that a job in Britain will check your credit, unless it's working in a high-up position with a bank or other financial establishment, where they might want to see that you're responsible with money.

Your credit file in the UK is based on a combination of your name, birthdate and your previous addresses (via the electoral roll) - your NI number doesn't come into it.
