In the latest of catastrophies, the disk which contains home directories and email on the server just started going bad on me.
I've turned off the email system for now which means registration emails will not go out. If you join Britnet email me at

and give me your username and I'll add you.
The BAD BAD news is that the disk that contains the backups was on the 2nd disk in the machine that died last week. That wasn't the disk that went bad however it seems something happened and it may have destroyed the directory, meaning it's going to take me hours to look through the disk for the data and recover it...if I can access it.
I did have a much older boot CD which is probably why the drive wasn't recognised so I'm working on downloading a new one right now. The bottom line is, the machine is OK but partly dead, the backup machine is dead but partly ok, the backup disk in the backup machine should be ok but looks dead. |
What can I say?
In light of these problems, I'm going to enhance my disaster recovery plan. Since Britnet doesn't make me money, I wasn't going to spend a whole lot dealing with it, especially since two major outages are very unlikely at the same time. However, it happened, so I'm going to look for ways to improve the backup and recovery time.
The good news is that I already have a disk to replace it with (This is a 160GB 7200RPM rather than a 80gb 5200RPM) you wont notice much difference since Britnet doesn't use this disk...but I will )
Any questions...post a followup )
Regards
Nigel
