Does anyone have it?

My mother-in-law's dog recently had a tumour removed and is undergoing chemotherapy. The cost of the treatment is $3K+. He is doing well though, and looks to be making a good recovery.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we have 2 dogs that are getting on, and a cat thats only a year behind. We toyed with the idea of pet insurance to cover treatment in case any of our pets need to have it. The going rate for decent coverage seems to be about $40 a month, which translates to over $100 per month for all of our pets. I'm wondering if its really worth it. Does anyone on here have any pet insurance, and have they had to use it?
I don't have it. I just pay the fees for visits and medication.

If my pet gets old and very sick, I would probably opt to put her out of her misery, rather than throw a lot of money at the vet and prolong her life. As I have the same feelings for myself (and live in a state that permits assisted suicide), I don't think that is unreasonable.
We had it for many years on our British born Rottie that we flew into the States. Basically I wouldn't bother. When Max got a torn ACL it didn't cover hardly anything - save your money.
Depends on what the small print on the policy says, like all insurance when you read * exclusions * sometimes it doesnt add up to much .

we have one old cat he is 19 and is showing some signs of arthritis we do spend quite a bit on health care for him as we did with his mother before him . our four legged friends are part of our family not just * pets *

when his health is such that there is no ,or little hope of him serviving very long without pain or discomfort we will have a decision to make euthansia .. not until then ..

meanwhile there are many human animals who in my mind should be candidates for the euthanasia programme although they might not agree with me that they are ready for it yet LOL
Well, we decided we wouldn't bother either. It's actually better to maybe create a savings account and just divert a certain amount into that account on a regular basis.

Even if we had had insurance when Ginger got sick ($32K spent on her) and Mo ($12K spent on her) and then Jack ($9K) it wouldn't have covered much of any of it.

We refinanced the house to pay for Gingers treatment.

Fortunately Jack was healthy all of his life and the costs we incurred were actually the operation and ICU care during the last year of his life.

Ginger was healthy all her life until she foundered, that's when things got expensive but again, she recovered and simply died from a a stroke at 27.

But we're going the savings plan route.

Bean (who is 14) will be having some dental work in a month or so, and that'll be about $600, and Thor will be having his tackle removed and have hip xrays to make sure they're good (fingers crossed as if they're not then he'll have to have surgery and that's about $3K)

So no, we don't think it's worth it.
Our fur buddies are so precious to us and I like the idea of a savings account. With having a rottie the only way the insurance really benefitted us was it covered us for liability insurance - not that our old boy ever had even a bad thought.

Max passsed away almost three years ago, I snuggled on the floor with him while the medication was given to him - boy never had a bad day in his life.
