Anyone recommend a good carpet cleaner? I have several rooms to do, with light to heavy staining and in the past, I paid a guy $200 to do the whole house.

Probably makes sense to just buy something as this would be the second time and I wondered if those Bissell Steam cleaners are any good?

I did think about renting a rug doctor but I'd rather work on a room every week or so and that would get old/expensive with all the to-ing and fro-ing the store.

Cheers!
I have a Hoover upright steam Vac. It's an older model, about ten years. It has all the attachments for furniture and drapes and such and it weighs a ton, but I use it once a month or so on the front room.
The newer ones are cheaper and lighter but have all the bits and bobs with them. Got it at Costco, wouldn't be without it.
How did it do the first time you used it? I assume once heavy stains are lifted out, they do a great job but a few of my rooms look a bit challenging to start with.

Thank you for the suggestion.
You need a personal carpet cleaner? What on earth are you up to in Oregon?
Hoover Spin Scub is awesome. just assume the seals will fail after two years, but while it's working it does the best job. Bissel, not so much. Brushes are rather pathetic.

Me? Nothing - I keep carpets clean but can't speak for others that visit/stay. I think my cat was throwing up on them a lot in the past too from others' mistreatment - since its just her and I, she has been fine.

Ok so Bissell is out then - I have had others say they are not very good.

I like the look of this Hoover. I already have a V2 vacuum and that is ok. Do you think this one is ok?

I'd talk to a proper vacuum shop, one that dedicates itself just to selling them, they specialize and will know what they have to keep fixing etc. Don't go to Sears or some other department shop, they just sell the cheapy shit.

I was going to get one of those bagless ones and after talking to a couple of shops was told that none of them work as well as bag ones.

That can't be accurate - one of the Dysons kicks just about anything else's arse.

looks fine, not the same as ours but similar. get an extended warranty if it's cheap ;)

Steam vacs don't have bags, Moo. P I find vacuum shops to be interested in selling you the product with the biggest commission/most ongoing expense -like cleaners that need bags ;)

To find out about cleaners, you need to talk to busy messy families D

We've also had a cheapo dirt devil which just made it past the year warranty it was fine for the perice, but couldn't handle our family. That may be all you need, though.

The nice thing about the spin scrub is that it also has a spin scrub hose attachment, so you can use in in your car, on your apholstery, on your stairs etc. And the brushes really do get the dirt out. Didn't actually try the bissell, but those brushes looked like they couldn't get butter off a hot knife.

Be prepared to barf at what actually comes out of an apparently not-so-grubby carpet! o

I know that you wally. The thing with the bagless ones is that they get clogged up and you have empty and clean them after each use. Even the Dysons, which I find to be pretty flimsy and expensive.

If your carpets are badly soiled ( :x ) why not consider replacing them. Home Depot has pretty reasonable rates and you are then not sucking up the dirt through the carpet.

Takes about 10 seconds and I'd say every 2-3 uses for me. The bags as I recall used to be hard to get on sometimes and could puff dust everywhere.

Seems an unnecessary expense if I can just clean them. I'm not planning on staying in the house for too much longer anyway - I just think it will help to make it more marketable and nicer for me to look at in the meantime, without eating into my potential profits.

Right, that's the end of my suggestions so you're on your own. D

completely agree - Dyson is the dogs bollox.

Carpets -007 and here's me thinking you were a member of the politeriat shock

I do not know much about cleaning them, but I do know we are slowly switching from any wall to wall stuff to polished oak floors with loose type rugs. Then we can use the Russian method of cleaning them. They take them out in the snow(Winter Time) and clean them with powdered snow. mrgreen shock
