As we watched the games tonight, the question of football's origins came up.

In which country was football invented and is soccer or football the original name? I know they are both used these days.

We don't know the answers, so we turn to you for help. roll grin

Thanks for any answers!
Football as in (british style ) has been played since before roman times in one form or another and is played by every nation in the world .

American Football however derived from a football game played betwen Rutgers and princetown on NOV 6 1869 .

Over a period of time the game changed as rugby was getting popular and in 1876 a man names 'Walter Camp ' wrote the first rules of what was to become the basis of the modern game called "FOOTBALLL NFL style "he became know as the "father of american football " .

THe name was keep as football and over time football (british style) became soccer in this part of the world .

Football is still called FOOTBALL or FOOTY in all other countries as the NFL type game is only played under the direction of the NFL in a few countries .

Hope this helps with my limited memory of the origins i read when i was at school.

Found this for you.

Association Football is where the word 'soccer' comes from - supposedly a derogatory term coined by a Rugby player in the 1800's.

Funny when you think Brits usually get uptight about using the word to describe the beautiful game. I answer to both - if there's a game on, I'll watch/play.
Thanks Guys! We were stumped! I know it was a trivial question, but it was a nagging one! roll

No really John it's true....

I wasn't joking!

The Florentine calcio, which emerged during the Renaissance, is considered the real ancestor of the game of soccer/football.
