My son is a dual citizen UK/US, he and his girlfriend have recently had a baby, my Son wants to get him a UK passport. Does he have to be registered with the British Embassy to be able to get a UK passport ??? he will also have US passport.
Thanks
Hi Lolly,
My understanding on this is it depends on where your son was born. If he is dual citizen but was born outside of the UK and has always lived outside of the UK there are more restrictions on him being able to pass on his UK citizenship.
I bet if you go to Britnet's homepage and follow the link to the US Embassy website, there will be details on there on how it all works )
I think your son must have lived in the UK for 5 years after the age of 18 (if he wasn't born there) in order to pass on his UK citizenship.
or something akin to that.
My Son was born in the UK, I have read on the website that it immediatley paases to his children they become UK citizens by desent

I think you are going to be fine. I just went through a similar thing:
I am a UK citizen born outside UK, and so is my wife. So was my mum, but my Dad was born in the UK. My youngest was born here in the USA and has US citizenship. I did the same research you did and concluded my son was British by descent. I wrote to the the UK embassy in Washington asking about citizenship but never got a reply so eventually I just applied for a passport. He got his UK passport almost instantly.
Just be aware that I believe US citizenship requires renouncing non US citizenship. The UK embassy suggests (well they used to a couple of years back) that you establish US citizenship documentation (eg passport) before you do the UK citizenship thing.
