Is it just me but has not someone come up with a drilling rig that can drill Horizontally. I would think it would have been far quicker than drilling from the top of the mountain???
I think one of the problems with going in horizontally is the instability of the land and the greater chances of cave-ins. Don't forget the first try they did of getting to the miners caved in and lost their two days of work.

One question I had when I was listening to the owner of the mine - is he getting any help from the governmentor other mining companies? For example, this is taking a very long time and I wondered if one reason was money/equipment?

It seems that when they think they are closer they get let down every time. (
They proberly do have a drill that does just that . its a matter of technical difficulties they are working on a very steep mountain and the stability of the drill or other equipment used is one the problems ...

Mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in modern society and unfortunatly sometimes things go resulting in loss of life .
the industry is the most regulated in the US and some of these *violations* we hear about are things like the porta potty being more then the regulated distance away from the work place . not all of them are safety related .

hope there is good news about the 6 miners trapped underground but as time goes by it looks more like they wont be recovered alive .
