So this coming School year 22 schools in our county are converting to year round instead of a traditional calender. We were fine with the change but some parents were not for varying reasons. So a group of Mums rallied together to protest and took it to court with mayoral backing and they won, the judge agreed it was not constitutional to make kids go to this type of school. Again fine by me if the decision had been made months ago, no they decide now was the time a month before summer hols were scheduled, parents had booked camps etc now no one knows what the hell is happening or when their kids will go back and to what school!! I am really peed off about it to be honest. One alternative is staggered days where some kidfs will be in school until 7 at night!! Crazy. evil
How is it unconstitutional? Does the constitution say that kids deserve a long summer vacation? I had no idea!
It might be state constitution, farmers in some agricultural states needed the help for harvest time.
They claim it is unconstitutional to make children attend year round. I know the school board is trying to appeal, one thing they can do is write and ask for permission from each family, the ones that say no will probably have to attend a traditional school elsewhere. Right now I have no idea what the hell is going on, my son is on track 1 which is set to start the second week of July.
Look at it this way, if the summer is as hot as they say it might be he'll be in an air conditioned enviroment. We've just had a couple of hot days, and utilities are so expensive here in California, the OAP centers with air conditioning are already open.
I know cos my neighbours dog has been outside barking until the cooling came in and they came back.

Have you considered home schooling. Socialisation is the only problem, but being a Brit, he'll fit in anywhere.

I have no prob with him being in year round or Traditional, whatever as long as he is happy and getting the education he needs. I will raise a ruckas about the evening schooling if they go that route though. I just wish they would sort something out damn quick as school is over in June and the Year round if it is staying starts July. Just want to be able to plan what we'll be doing.

Sadly being in the US will guarantee he will not get the education he needs, unless you pay for it.
