So the guy makes a joke, a rather distasteful joke, but a joke all the same. Now, every publicity seeking opportunist has come out of the woodwork to protest, and with such passion and vitriol that you'd think the guy had killed their mother. What did he do? Insulted their hair and used a derogatory word a that unfortunately has become common in everyday language.
He should be fired, but because a silly old man who's not funny. But that's it, if he offends then don't listen.
I was a little surprised at this. I turned on the Tv just in time to see a re-run of the infamous statement. I was, like, wow, you can say anything on satellite and giggled, then they started on about how everyone is upset.
This morning I saw the coach and several members of the team giving speeches.
I'm at a loss.
A guy makes a statement, meant to be a joke, in bad taste and the whole world is turned upside down.
A president starts an illegal war and many people are killed and this is acceptable.
We may live in interesting times, but believe me, the world is going to hell in a hand-basket.
Anyone know what a hand-basket is?
yea real bad joke, shows what a pratt he is, but seems that people here seem to think if you say something in jest, then thats what you really believe. Mel gibson and the like all fit that profile.
I am still trying to figure that one out even after 7 yrs here. Are brits more thicked skinned and tend to look on the lighter side more. . People here tell me I can make a joke out of the worse situation and think its funny, when they would think its not the done thing.
I guess I could be a very wealthy man if I went around sueing people for calling me a limie, we kicked your arse in 1776 or we saved you during ww1 and ww2 etc.
Cannot believe the air time this has taken up, surely something else must be happening in the world thats more important.
If I knew nothing else about you three, I would deduce from your posts that you haven't reared beautiful and accomplished daughters.
I think the point is, if you're a DJ, you have to follow the rules. Using Racist/Sexist derogatory phrases is unacceptable, especially on broadcast media, and especially when he was not generalising but directing his remarks at a specific group of people. The fact that Imus apologised but claimed it was light-hearted jesting is not the point. The resulting media catastrophe is a result of the catastrophe that is the media. He said what he said.
If I said the same thing at work and somebody chose to report me I would expect to be punished/reprimanded for the same reasons. These may be PC times, but to some extent there's a reason why we don't say things.
He should have thought a bit more before opening his mouth.

Ha, that's where you're wrong. I've reared many a beautiful and accomplished daughter.
Ok, I'm now watching and listening carefully. Last night Jay Leno was extremly sexist at least twice. Some dude on the radio was sexist, ageist and cussed. The fat barsteward addicted to painkillers, some right wing chappie shouldn't last long, and all the hip hop black kids with their songs about hos, everyone of them off the air. Fair dos.
(ps, never listened to Don Imus, but love the hats the man wears. I have a soft spot for a man who can wear a hat.)
I think that Imus's comments were idiotic from the get go, but what annoys me just as much is that Imus apologises to Al Sharpton.
Who the hell does Al Sharpton think he is?
I know that Imus made these stupid remarks about 'nappy headed hos' but did Sharpton think that Imus was addressing him too? roll
I was watching the sports report on a NY channel (SNY) and there was Jesse Jackson too.
There was a recent episode of Southpark which was eerily similar to these recent events after Imus's stupid remarks, and it makes you think sometimes about comments like these and the double standards that are so very obvious in society. ???
I think one of the reasons the remarks caused the offence they did is that they were directed at young women, who were doing nothing more than playing sport.
I've heard far worse things said about Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and even Oprah Winfrey, but I think there's a perception that these people are in the public eye and can either take it on the chin, or have the means to fight back.
I agree that there is plenty of hypocrisy and double standards to go around, but I think apart from the obvious racial issues (still America's most sensitive issue) there was a simple "go and pick on someone your own size" sentiment.
Doesn't this stuff get blown out of all proportion because of cable news?
I don't care AT ALL for Imus. What he said was rather nasty. Hate the word Ho, and these girls certainly didn't have it coming. Does it mean I think he should have been fired? Not from my viewpoint but he does look very old. In fact, if he had a British accent he could fill in for one of The Old Gits. Shock Jock indeed.
I care even less for Al Sharpton. Why does everyone who says something racist go and have to grovel to Al f-king Sharpton? The man is obviously racist himself.
Another case of pc gone grazy i for one had never heard the phase " nappy headed hos " before but understand its A/A street slang . now you can buy t shirts and other paraphanalia sporting that phrase on the internet ...

what has has happened here is its given that leach
/self appointed leader of the a/a Al sharpton another peg to hang his hat on, and make the rounds doing speaches/ lectures and in the process lining his own pockets ..
i dont support don imus and think his remarks were of base , and not at all funny an appology should have been enough .
the percieved race division will not be healed if the coals are contunually stoked by the likes of al sharpton.
whew was al sharpton when Jesse jackson called NY hymee towm ?? .?? or when that racist lousie farrakon spits out hated against the jews .
or when the leader of the "new black panthers " called the wrongly accused boys from the duke lacross team * rapists* without even seeing any evidence to support that statement ?
Dont even want to mention the *tawanee brawley * incident .
and when is he and the rest of the * holier than thou crowd * going to condemm and ask for the firing of rap artist who in every record and every other word call ladies * quote
bitches . hoes . and other insulting words i wont repeat . end quote .??
did imas pick out the black members of the basket ball team of did he adress his remarks to the whole team ..meaning he called *nappy headed hoes * to the white members ( 3 i think ) as well .?? .
of to buy my * nappy heaed ho * teddy bear .

one of the best takes on it imo ive read is coped below courtesy of jason whitlock
Jason Whitlock weighs in.....
Thank you, Don Imus. You’ve given us (black people) an excuse to avoid our real problem.
You’ve given Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson another opportunity to pretend that the old fight, which is now the safe and lucrative fight, is still the most important fight in our push for true economic and social equality.
You’ve given Vivian Stringer and Rutgers the chance to hold a nationally televised recruiting celebration expertly disguised as a news conference to respond to your poor attempt at humor.
Thank you, Don Imus. You extended Black History Month to April, and we can once again wallow in victimhood, protest like it’s 1965 and delude ourselves into believing that fixing your hatred is more necessary than eradicating our self-hatred.

So that's what this was all about.....

In a clear sign of its intent to reign in dissident American media personalities, and their growing influence in American culture, US War Leaders this past week launched an unprecedented attack upon one of their most politically ‘connected’, and legendary, radio hosts named Don Imus after his threats to release information relating to the September 11, 2001 attacks upon that country.

So that explains everything.
There's me thinking it was just one of those incestuous media things where a bunch of self important pundits and political has beens settle scores.
What Imus said was obnoxious... as best I can tell most what he always says is obnoxious... as is most of what comes out of the talk radio crowd and so called cable news.
But I couldn't figure, why Imus? why now? - here's the answer....

We have given him his power by listening to his crap every day and given him top biling on the talk shows with out a audiance he is worthless .
