these are some of my thoughts you may have differant opinions . smile
Jesus Camp .
frightening brain washing children like that , from the same political group ( religiuos right ) who complain about the hate that is taught in moslim schools .
Borat .
O f beat but extremly funny movie. not politically corrrect i enjoyed immensly the scene in the home here he ask tha lady at the dinner about the toilet paper.
The good shephard .
Disapointing long confusing movie with matt damon who during the course of the movie that takes place over 25 years didnt age one day still had his baby face .
We gave up on netflix cos the turnaround was almost an afterthought and made the cost of rental not worth the effort. I'm a bit pissed off really, Its been working out fine for us- considering the price of renting from Blockbuster ,and we've been getting through a whole bunch of movies. But now we're settled I've been scouring the local library system for movies, which is pretty good. Last film we saw at the flix was Zodiac- which is a good adaptation of the famous true-crime book. Its hard to judge a film when its based on fact and so well directed- I mean unless its obviously complete exploitation. Speaking of which, saw trailers for stuff- That new Tarantino movie Grindhouse, which is getting good reviews from the same people that would have given poor reviews to the films its spoofing/paying homage to. We saw Stranger than Fiction which is actually really good. Will Farrell, like Jim Carrey, when given a decent script and a good story can actually benefit a picture.. ho hum. Whats new that isn't a slasher/teen movie? I don't know. Why aren't there movies about older people (that is people over 19 years old)? Movies about people that can actually speak in full sentences, that have some sort of stability in their lives.. Oh, there are and they're foreign language films.
Saw a trailer for a movie called Bug, which at first look seemed to be an uncredited remake of William Castles classic weirdo flick from 1970, but, it turns out its based on a play about people who shut themselves away in an apartment, afraid of the world outside and the Bugs are really a manifestation of their fear. sounds really interesting. The US seems to have alot of that at the moment.
The Illusionist, thought was a very good movie and well done.
The Prestige, jumped around a bit but came together well towards the end. Keeps you guessing what is actually going on etc tec
Ah yes, Stranger than fiction, much better than I thought it would be. Also, Marie Antoinette, plain eye candy,( well, actually, anything but plain, the costumes were stupendous, in fact the sets were damn gpood too!) not much of a script, but pleasant.
A copy of Footlight Frenzy, Tarnished Silver, that an old pal transferred from video to DVD. Bloody hilarious. A 70's version of comedy which made me think of Dario Fo.
Blood Diamond - excellent movie
Departed - great movie, crap ending
The Blockbuster Total Access is great now you can exchange the movies you get through the mail for ones at the store. We've seen just about every movie there's been recently!

You must be some of the unlucky netflix customers i hear about from time to time .
we have had netflix for about 4 years now and we generally ( always the exception ) get 3 movies somtime around thurs/fri watch them during the weekend put them in the post mon morn and the new ones arrive here thurs .fri following week .
adds up to average of 12 movies a month for $18 something a month just over $1.50 per movie not a bad deal in my opinion.
we have a netflix ware house in austin about 20 miles away that could explain a lot .
It was taking too long for them to receive a movie and send out another, and because they all go home for the weekend, even if we returned a movie wednesday it would be tuesday or wednesday the following week before they even shipped stuff for some reason. We're trying the inferior Blockbuster online rental system now (They censor movies!!) just to see how it works. I need fillums!! roll
I highly recommend a German movie called "In July"...look it up. Great story and a little quirky.
Watched 'Borat' DVD the other night. We found it surprisingly tame in comparison to his British and U.S TV stuff to date, with quite a bit of re-treaded material. The Pamela Anderson storyline was really crap too. Still, it had its moments.
Rented 'Volver' a couple of nights ago. It's a little hard to imagine Penelope Cruz as a young woman in a village with a drunk slob for a husband, but once you get over that credibility gap, it's a lovely movie. A stylish light comedy with quite a spiritual side.
We tried to watch Steve Coogan's attempt at a Hollywood film 'Lies And Alibis' but it came off after about half-an-hour. It is a truly shark-jumping moment in Mr. Coogan's career. Also, he's a great comic, but a dreadful actor.
We liked 'Departed' despite the extrordinary body-count.
We also finally got around to 'An Inconvenient Truth'. I think Gore tells the situation well, but I was surprised how self-serving he is and how it equally seemed to be the "aren't I wonderful?" show. This feeling of unease has been heightened by reports (that I read after watching the film) that Mr. Gore falls far short of achieving the carbon-neutral lifestyle he so passionately preaches, zipping around in private jets etc.
http//www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-08-09-gore-green_x.htm
And on his lecture tour, such as recently here in Toronto, media are completely barred from the events, presumably so that Mr. Gore's "official" media can make more money for Mr. Gore while only depicting him in the best light IE a halo, without asking pesky, troublesome questions like, why do you zip around on a private jet etc?
Despite all of these misgivings, I think an 'Inconvenient Truth' serves its purpose
Very much want to see 'Lives of Others' a German film about how East Germans spied on each other for the STASI during the Cold War.
We recently crawled back to Blockbuster. Our favourite DVD store in Toronto, the wonderful alternative culture Suspect, has all the kind of movies and TV series I like plus an excellent British section, but it's at the other side of the city to where I now live and has punishing 2 night rentals. Not good when you're doing odd shifts and crazy hours. I've paid more in late fees there than rental fees I think. (They had an excellent cheeky sticker/bubble on 'An Inconvenient Truth' though that read "Remember when my wife tried to ban rock and roll?")
Our local dive is even more punitive One night rentals at $4.50 a pop for a crap selection.
Blockbuster's no late fees are very much appreciated around these parts for the more mainstream titles. I still go loyally to Suspect for anything a little more off-the-wall than Blockbuster can provide. I've noticed our local Blockbuster at least has been trying to make more of an effort to stock foreign movies and interesting TV series too. How do they censor movies?
We've not tried the equivalent of Netflix here, (zip.ca)possibly because the majority of what we watch are still mainly TV series not generally available here, I order from Amazon UK. Will try that 'In July' movie, Scramble.
how do blockbuster cersot movies .
l there are companies out there that print contraversial movies with SEX/ LANGUAGE IN THEM that they edit out and sell to compaies like blockbuster and walmart . thses stoes have such a hold volumme wise on the rental / buy of dvds that they are able to do this unobtructed .
example IF you can find a copy of * the dreamers * it was originally releases as a nc17 or directors cut meaning you saw it as the director filmed it .
in walmart of blockbuster lok closley at the rating and if wil be a r at the most many *nude /sex *scenes have been cut .
whats infuriating about this *holier than thou * attutude is movies with gratuitious violence go on the shelves of these companies unaltered seemingly your kids are feed this stuff often with acts of extreme violence ,murder , and hate every day on the tv and available at the *rental store .
no wonder we see more and more of teens and even preteens commiting acts of total brutality /and violence open each other and sometimes any one who happens to be in there way ...
Oh i nearly forget walmart who are selling these films * adapted * to make them *family frendly * sell guns in the next aisle .
like eveything else in this world of ours .. all rules of what is* MORAL * and what isnt is governed by MONEY dont kid yourselfs otherwise
I'm deeply shocked. Honestly. I'm going to try and find out immediately if Blockbuster in Canada indulge in this dreadful practice.
I notice, despite stocking just about every other popular TV series, our local Blockbuster doesn't have 'The Wire'. I wonder if it's a content issue. Mind you they have 'Deadwood' where every other word is Moth+@$***!# and co#$su**~!
Blockbuster choose R-rated or Theatrical versions over stronger full versions, which is annoying. Usually 'unrated version' means there's frontal nudity. we went to Netflix to see films like Realm of the Senses and Ichi the Killer cos BB stock only highly edited versions. Its a shame that they do this, it puts me off renting from them. Now I have to go out and track down stuff on the internet that I would otherwise rent and buy it instead.
oh, JohnA just said most of that.. oh well. He's right too.. grin
Blockbuster have always edited. The first one I found and stopped me going there was of all things Arthur.
English version, right at the start of the movie,
I fell out of the f*cking car!
Blockbuster version,
I fell out of the godamn car!
I disagreed right there. The latter was far more offensive, and I'm not that big on Gods.
From what I can gather, from doing a bit of reading, Blockbuster in Canada used to follow the U.S stores' practices but hasn't since 1995 when the Canadian stores' rules were relaxed.
They apparently go by the Canadian rating system, which like Britain includes an 18+ rating. and stock director's cuts and even some soft porn titles (although I've yet to see that with my own eyes). I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for cuts, but I think I would have noticed by now.
I've often wondered why they don't have the technology to 'auto-censor' DVD movies. For instance, if a movie was R-rated, why wouldn't there be capability to select a PG-13 or PG or whatever version from the DVD with censoring dependent on the rating type selected.
