The United States’ second largest coffeehouse chain, Caribou Coffee, have revealed their first ever line of joke coffees in celebration of April Fools’ Day. Spokesperson Elle Johnson said “Here at Caribou, we feel the coffeehouse scene has lost it’s sense of humour. We want to show that you can be serious about coffee and still enjoy the lighter side of life. Our one-day-only range of joke coffees will put the fun back into Fools’ day and also raise money for one of our chosen charitable causes, breast cancer research.”
Designed to look, taste and smell the same as their three most popular coffees, The Flatte, Clappuccino and Mocha-ka will cause consumers to experience excessive flatulence, genital itching and sudden bowel movements. There will be no extra charge for the dupe drinks, but donations will be accepted to benefit breast cancer charities. Pranksters will also be able to purchase “I was a Boob for Boobs” t-shirts and baseball caps for their victims. Caribou’s Senior Vice President for Marketing, Kathy Hollenhorst, dismissed suggestions that unwitting consumers would suffer unnecessary embarrassment, saying that physical effects will be “swift and short-lived”.
Caribou barista Katie Shefferley said “I think it’s cool. My brother’s coming to buy coffee for all his staff. It’s hilarious. I’m going to try the Flatte –but only after I’ve finished my shift, just in case! I don’t want to try the other two, though.”
